ABSTRACT:This article focuses on the culture and politics of apology for injustice against LGBTQ+ people in the context of Anglo-European, liberal democratic nationstates. I examine the circumstances and limits of Justin Trudeau’s apology for the gay purge and related initiatives since November 2017. I contend that while the normative affective structure of liberal apology mandates a move from mythical homo sorrow to mythical reparation, jettisoned affects, experiences and activism from below exceed the state’s directive for reparation and forgetting. I name such excesses divine queer sorrow. More specifically, I trace the remaindered and peripheral affect of testimonies and activism to think about not only a queer affective structure of forgiveness but also a transformative future stemming from activist sensibilities.RÉSUMÉ:Cet article porte sur la culture et la politique des excuses pour les injustices commises contre les personnes LGBTQ+ dans les États-nations démocratiques et libéraux de culture anglo-européenne. ABSTRACT:Dionne Brand’s meditative and narrative rule-breaking book, A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging, reveals the ways in which the incredible effortfulness of living, dreaming and sleeping is not only proof of a shared condition of Blackness but also of an antiblack world. Sleep (or a lack thereof) indexes scales of and relations to antiblackness. In this paper, I consider the mirrored boundaries between wakefulness/sleep and life/death, probing their psycho-existential and ontological infrastructures. I argue that these states of being are tethered, however tenuously, to each other and in doing so, clarify the stakes of the ostensibly quotidian and mundane. By analyzing insomnia, slumber, fever dreams and nightmares, the text reveals the literal and metaphorical coordinates that locate the bounds of Black consciousness and freedom. ABSTRACT:Returning to Dionne Brand’s A Map to the Door of No Return (2001) in light of its scholarly reception and Brand’s subsequent works, this article focuses on narration as a form of post-colonial redress with particular attention to Brand’s use of second-person narration as a device of counter-estrangement. Taking a cue from Brian Richardson’s description of the second person as an “unnatural” register of narration, it explores Brand’s use of the second person as a voice of commingled alterity that has strong ethical implications for readers. With Brand’s analysis of “what sits in narrative” in An Autobiography of an Autobiography of Reading (2020) as a hermeneutic, the article demonstrates how, by blurring the gap between narratee and reader, Brand puts the reader “in the room with history.”RÉSUMÉ:Revenant sur A Map to the Door of No Return (2001) de Dionne Brand à la lumière de sa réception savante et des œuvres ultérieures de l’auteure, cet article s’intéresse à la narration comme forme de réparation postcoloniale. ABSTRACT:In this reflection, I offer some thoughts on my introduction to Dionne Brand’s Map to the Door of No Return, and invite the reader to consider the text as a guide for an archipelagic reading practice, offering signposts for reading other works of poetry from the Caribbean in particular, and threading these pieces together in a manner that is ‘symphonic.’ In this symphonic arrangement, I offer examples of the texts that MTTDNR taught me to read—including Derek Walcott, Sylvia Wynter, Kamau Brathwaite, and others—and underscore the call and response between MTTDNR and these texts. Ultimately, Brand’s work has allowed my own participation in this call and response due to its role as the connective tissue in my own reading practice.RÉSUMÉ:Je propose ici quelques-unes des réflexions qu’a suscitées chez moi la découverte de l’œuvre de Dionne Brand Map to the Door of No Return. J’invite la lectrice et le lecteur à considérer ce texte comme un guide pour une pratique archipélagique de la lecture. ABSTRACT:In this paper I argue that in Map to the Door of No Return, Dionne Brand is an ethnographer of Black interiority and gives us a poetics of Black psychoanalysis rejoining our slaveness to a less alienated geo-environmental social. I argue that we might read Brand alongside Saidiya Hartman and Paule Marshall as writers coming to terms with Black being as one consecrated in disruption and producing a “tribe of the Middle Passage.” I further suggest that they do so without a demand for a common unity beyond the logic of survival, and without a demand for an official or proper name.RÉSUMÉ:Dans cet article, je soutiens que Dionne Brand, dans Map to the Door of No Return, se fait ethnographe de l’intériorité noire et qu’elle propose une poétique de la psychanalyse noire reliant notre esclavage à un contexte social géo-environnemental moins aliéné.
