The Actor’s Art on Screen: Inspirations from John Howard Swain 演员在银幕上的艺术:来自约翰·霍华德·斯温的灵感

Acting is meant to be a conscious effort at creating a living being from a somewhat inanimate character from the pages of a script. With proper interpretation, acting and real life can have a semblance that makes it difficult for the audience to draw a distinction between the actor’s character life and the life of the actor himself. Many actors find it difficult to create this semblance as a result of their desperation to copy the style of other actors whom they refer to as mentors. This has given rise to repetitive and plastic kind of acting which does not show creativity. John Howard Swain provides a whole new dimension that breaks down the study of acting in order for the actor to fully come to terms with his potential in his book The Science and Art of Acting for the Camera. Consequently, the study discovers that the bane attached to the acting profession is inseparable from the following; actor’s laziness and redundant attitude toward learning, lack of self-confidence, pride, unprofessionalism etc. To get it right, this paper therefore recommends that actors pay close attention to their script, ceaselessly possess the habit of learning newer ideas, hard-work and diligence and ultimately live their characters’ lives rather than merely acting them.

Study on Students’ Motivation for Taking a Foreign Language Course 学生选修外语课程的动机研究

We estimate that foreign language learners in tertiary institutions have individual objectives for studying a particular language. These objectives become a major motivation for these learners to take a foreign language course. It is therefore our major preoccupation in this research to study in detail students’ individual motives for taking a French language course especially at the University level. We believe that having knowledge about students’ individual motivation is beneficial in meeting learning and teaching objectives.
我们估计,大专院校的外语学习者学习一门特定的语言有各自的目标。这些目标成为这些学习者学习外语课程的主要动机。因此,我们在这项研究中主要关注的是详细研究学生参加法语课程的个人动机,特别是在大学水平。我们相信,了解学生的个人动机有助于达到学与教的目标。

Supervision System Reconstruction of Online Advertising in China 中国网络广告监管体系的重构

Abstract: Under the influence of the frequently updated new media technology, great changes have taken place in the ecology of online advertising supervision up till now. In the past, most of the issues about advertising in China came to our view with the help of professional media. However, the role of We Media in the participation of  social supervision of advertising is still on the rise. Although professional media organizations are still the supervision backbone to report the follow-up supervision, the boundary of advertising supervision is increasingly blurred after the multiple subjects intervened the network public opinion field, and the advertising supervision is becoming more and more extensive in the multi-agent competition. With the enhancement of the dialogism and personal perspective of online advertising supervision, the basic mode of traditional advertising management is undergoing the subversion and reconstruction of the new narrative of social media in China.
摘要:在新媒体技术不断更新的影响下,网络广告监管生态发生了巨大变化。在过去,中国广告的大部分问题都是借助专业媒体才进入我们的视野。然而,自媒体在参与广告社会监督方面的作用仍在上升。虽然专业媒体机构仍是报道后续监管的监管骨干,但在多主体介入网络舆论场后,广告监管的边界日益模糊,广告监管在多主体竞争中越来越广泛。随着网络广告监管对话性和个人视角的增强,传统广告管理的基本模式正经历着中国社交媒体新叙事的颠覆与重构。

Investigating the Relationships between Effective Principal Leadership Practices and School Effectiveness As Perceived By Teachers 调查有效校长领导实践与教师所感知的学校效能之间的关系

The international literature is replete with a discourse on the link between principal leadership and school effectiveness. However, in the Caribbean where there is limited school effectiveness research, perceptions of key school factors can drive critical decision making or education policy regarding the influence of principals to improve schools. Interestingly, although the literature is sated with features of high performing schools, it is debatable as to the leadership practices that must be emphasized for principals to lead their schools to effectiveness. This research examined the relationship between effective principal leadership practices and school effectiveness as ascertained by teachers in primary and secondary public schools in Grenada. A quantitative correlation research design was used to survey the ratings of teachers on effective principal leadership practices and school effectiveness. The results confirmed the relationship between Effective Principal Leadership Practices and School Effectiveness. The results also indicated that at the primary school level, principal leadership practices with a focus on instruction best envisages school effectiveness whereas at the secondary level, the evidence suggests that the better practices relate to instructional focus and accountability focus.     In the Caribbean where there is limited school effectiveness research, perceptions of critical factors can drive critical decision making or education policy.  The international literature is replete with a discourse on the link between principal leadership and school effectiveness. This research share light on the relationship between principal leadership practices and school effectiveness as experienced by/ public primary and secondary school teachers in a Grenadian context. Using a survey design, the study revealed that in a purposive sample of 726 teachers, Principal Leadership Practices and School Effectiveness shared a moderate direct relationship. Multiple Regression Analysis revealed that at the primary school level, principal leadership practices with a focus on instruction best predicts school effectiveness whereas at the secondary level, the evidence suggests that the better practices relate to instructional focus and accountability focus. This study builds on the limited foundation of school effectiveness research in the Caribbean. There are implications for school development plans and for the advancement of principal leadership as in preparatory programmes, training, or professional development.

In this paper, I present a straightforward secular (non-religious, non-theological) theory: the Hebrew in the Torah is an invented language, akin to Klingon or Elvish, that was designed to write the Torah. Under this theory, the letters, words, grammar, and key terms and phrases of the Biblical language were selected, co-determined, and creatively bootstrapped as a sort of language game. The invented language may have been designed, like Esperanto or Basic English, to include elements in common with known natural languages; nevertheless, the details and final form of the language were bespoke and under the control of a creative author. In the invented system, some anagrams were defined to mean related concepts; letters were assigned number values so words and phrases could “add up to” interesting numbers (“Gematria”); and the author planned a text that would include a density of word-games like pangrams (sentences that use all letters of the alphabet), lipograms (sections of the text that are missing one particular letter), and particular numbers of letters and words throughout. However, all signs of seemingly deliberate language games might instead merely be the result of cherry picking of interesting findings. In this paper, I present analysis and new approaches that might help distinguish whether the apparent language games in the Torah imply an intentional invented language or, instead, only result from over-analysis and were not intended by the author to be present in the text.

This paper analyzes the effectiveness of humanitarian efforts inspired by Western principles of emancipation in comparison with indigenous relief efforts. Specifically, cases relating to Muslim women will be shown to exemplify general problems associated with humanitarian efforts on behalf of “other women.” This paper argues that Western humanitarian interventions are ineffective acts of cultural imperialism, and that interventions by local women’s agencies, combined with international support and media coverage, yield much better results. It also argues that international aid work should be grounded in the local cultures, whereas local NGOs should adopt Western modes of operating.

Christian Science Responses to Major Public Health Crises 基督教科学对重大公共卫生危机的反应

Christian Science is a protestant church founded by Mary Baker Eddy in the late 19th century. It emphasizes spiritual healing, the use of non-medical force to cure various diseases. The Christian Science community responded to three major public health crises (the Spanish Flu, H1N1, and COVID-19) quite differently from the average public, with its focus on the cleansing of fear to cure physical symptoms. This paper reviews Eddy’s publications and summarizes her opinions towards treating contagious diseases. The respective responses from the Christian Science community towards the three major public health crises are also analyzed and compared. The paper concludes on the importance of religious literacy among policy makers and the public in order to better implement public health initiatives.

It emphasizes spiritual healing, the use of non-medical force to cure various diseases. The Christian Science community responded to three major public health crises (the Spanish Flu, H1N1, and COVID-19) quite differently from the average public, with its focus on the cleansing of fear to cure physical symptoms. This paper reviews Eddy’s publications and summarizes her opinions towards treating contagious diseases. The respective responses from the Christian Science community towards the three major public health crises are also analyzed and compared. Hand Block Printing: Experimenting with Assorted Surfaces and Inks 手工雕版印刷:各种表面和油墨的实验

Block printing has gained attention in academic discourse over the years due to its primacy in the art of printing. This oldest method of printing which is believed to have originated from Asia is currently practiced globally. In Ghana, the art is locally known as Adinkra printing, which essentially rely on a natural dye called Adinkra Aduro and calabash as the chief block surface for printing. Despite the popularity gained by this traditional art, little has been explored with respect to block surfaces, fabrics and printing inks. The Adinkra Aduro which lacks a colour fastness property is printed only on woven cotton fabrics. With the art studio-based research method, this study sought to explore varied block surfaces on assorted fabrics with both water-soluble and water-insoluble printing inks to open the horizon of block printing in the Ghanaian context. The study revealed marvelous effects which could be achieved with other block surfaces apart from the calabash surface used by Ghanaian textiles artists for block printing. It is recommended that, the block printing sector of the Ghanaian textiles industry would extend their resources to varied block surfaces and printing inks if not the fabric, to broaden the scope of the art.

Karagatsis Revisited: The performance Junkermann by Dimitris Tarloou 重游卡拉加吉斯:迪米特里斯·塔卢的表演《容克曼》

The article examines the performance Junkermann directed by Dimitris Tarloou, which was presented initially in 2018-19 at theatre “Poreia” in Athens. The performance is an adaptation of the novel Junkermann by M. Karagatsis and constructs a dream-like universe that explores the haunting journey and memories of the novel’s protagonist. The article investigates the performance as a case study of adaptation dramaturgy in contemporary Greek theatre. As I argue in the study, the performance proposes a reconfiguration of the novel into a stage spectacle with symbolistic undertones inspired by plays such as A Dream Play by August Strindberg. In order to explore fully the performance, I look into the stage text and the metatext and I analyze the decisive use of stichomythia that is employed in the adaptation. I also underline the antirealistic aesthetics of the director and the renewed stage interpretation of the story of Junkermann.
