The article summarizes the results of a comparative study of the situation of the Armenian Apostolic and Russian Orthodox Churches in 1917—1945. Methodologically, the research is based on the theory of the dialogue of cultures, which is necessary for understanding and evaluating the current stage of Russian-Armenian relations, understanding the role of interethnic and interreligious cooperation of both states in the post-Soviet space. The study revealed a significant similarity in the fate of the Armenian and Russian churches in the context of the unfolding anti-religious policy during the 1920s and 1930s, which was reflected in the reduction of dioceses, the closure of churches, the arrests of clergy, the emergence of church renewal structures both in the Soviet Russia and in Soviet Armenia. Both churches have gone through the stage of temporary absence of patriarchal administration; Armenian dioceses in the Soviet Russia and Orthodox churches in the Armenian SSR have actually ceased their activities. It is established which events of 1944—1945. they contributed to the resumption of inter-church ties lost in previous decades.

The article deals with the formation and representation of the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War in the cross-border territory of the Augustów Canal (the border areas of Belarus, Poland and Lithuania). The subject of the research is the fates of the servicemen of the 68th Grodno Fortified Region, who were the first to receive the attack of the Nazi troops in June 1941. The research uses the archival documents, published and unpublished memoirs of the direct participants of the events, results of the research of the battlefields on the territory of Belarus and Poland. The author believes that for the formation and representation of collective historical memory and identity the results of research using special historical methods and active use of various forms of commemorative practices are relevant: publication of scientific and popular scientific literature, which popularizes the historical and cultural heritage of the region, inclusion of monuments and memorial places in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values, installation of monuments, memorial signs and information posts, development of tourist routes and carrying out military-historical reconstructions, creation of museums and museum expositions.

In the work of Dionysius of Byzantium “Sailing through the Bosporus” (32), it is said that there was a tomb of the certain Megarian hero Hipposthenes on the northern shore of the Horn Bay; the reality of this topographic object allows us to consider that character as a historical person. Other sources do not report anything about the Hipposthenes the Megarian, however, the Spartan athlete of the same name, a six-time Olympian winner, is well known, to whom a temple was even dedicated in Sparta, where, according to some prophecy, he was revered on a par with Poseidon (Paus. III. 13. 9; 15. 7; V. 8. 9). The presence of the sanctuary of Poseidon with an oracle on the southern bank of the Horn (Dion. Byz. 9), coupled with the message of Constantine Porphyrogenitus about the participation in the founding of Byzantium, along with the Megarians and Boeotians, also the Lacedaemonians (De themat. II. 1. 43—45 Pertusi) allows us to presumably reconstruct at the end of the VII century B. C. — beginning of the VI century B. C. a certain episode associated with the withdrawal of an additional contingent of colonists to Byzantium, in which the Spartan Hipposthenes was involved. He died or was killed in the course of these events, covering his name with truly immortal glory, for which he received extraordinary honors both in his homeland and in Byzantium.

Following in the footsteps of M. Muravyeva and A. Kamensky the paper offers a close examination of 25 cases of real, alleged, or implied sex of a human male with a non-human animal in eighteenth-century Russia discovered in the collections of local administrations in the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts (RGADA). In analyzing these cases I address the issues of their representativeness, the motives of the defendants and the peculiarities of their psychology, and the factors facilitating such activities. I also seek to trace the link between involvement in bestiality and church calendar (fasts and holidays), consumption of alcohol, contacts with human females leading to possible sexual arousal, and social background.

In the Russian legal system, the phenomenon of persons of oblivious origin emerged in the early eighteenth century. During population censuses, enumerators discovered a number of people, unaware of their parents and places of domicile, who subsequently did not belong to any social stratum. Despite its realization that many persons of oblivious origin were in fact runaway peasants and deserters, the government decided to use them to increase its population in different parts of the country instead of returning them to their official localities. At the same time, some runaways independently managed to be added to the census rolls in towns and villages, thereby changing their social status. As a result, the examination of the issue of people of oblivious origin as one of the strategies of deception improves our understanding of adaptation tools and everyday practices, employed by the inhabitants of the Russian Empire.

The article presents a comparative analysis of the politics of memory in Belarus and Russia. The main periods of its transformation in 1990—2010s are specified. The question about the strategy of interaction between the main actors of memory policy is posed. The perspectives of memory studies development, related to the question about the future, which is very rarely raised in modern studies, although it is fundamental for all actors, are outlined. Another important gap in contemporary memory studies seems to be the question of practices of commemoration, which form not only national and local communities, but also decentralized affective relations of a new type. The authors advocate the thesis that the key role in contemporary Russian and Belarusian memory politics is played by the restriction of presentistic subordination of past and future to pragmatic interests of the present.

The attention to the ancient drama characterized European culture at the turn of the 19—20th centuries was reflected in Russia in the search for new forms in theatrical art both at the very beginning of the 20th century and after the events of 1917. The author focuses on the most remarkable performances of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex in 1910s in St. Petersburg/Petrograd at the Ciniselli Circus: in 1911 this Greek tragedy was staged by the famous German director Max Reinhardt, and in 1918 renewed by the famous Russian actor Yury Yuriev. The analysis of the important sources — the memoirs of participants and eyewitnesses of these performances, reviews and various publications in theater magazines, as well as surviving archival materials, etc. — makes it possible to trace the features of the interpretation and reception of this tragedy, which was especially consonant with the turbulent era of world cataclysms and wars.

The article observes the image of the specialist in classical studies I. I. Tolstoy as a lecturer. The author reconstructs the career path of the scholar, which started in 1908, when I. I. Tolstoy began to lecture at the faculty of history and philology of St. Petersburg University. The memories of a number of I. I. Tolstoy’s students are provided in the article, among those there are outstanding philologists I. M. Tronskiy, Ya. M. Borovskiy, O. M. Freidenberg and S. Ya. Lurie. The reminiscences of N. S. Grinbaum are of particular interest because I. I. Tolstoy was his research advisor, and N. S. Grinbaum used to visit the classes that took place at I. I. Tolstoy’s apartment.

The article presents a Russian translation of an important epigraphic evidence of the Hellenistic Egypt, the so-called Sais Inscription. The Sais Inscription was compiled in the Late Middle Egyptian language during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus (285—246 BCE) in late 260s but was later transported to Rome. Only three fragments of an inscription exist to this date: A). Codex Ursinianus, fol. 6 ro — redrawing of a part of the inscription made in 16th century, B). a fragment of a stela at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (No. 1034) and C). a large fragment of a stela at the Musée du Louvre (No C 123). The available fragments make it possible to reconstruct the first eleven columns of the text which was probably longer. These fragments allowed Chr. Thiers to publish the reconstructed inscription in 2001. The present publication is largely based on this reconstruction and aims to clarify some disputed passages of the text and to provide its new commentary. It is necessary to note the importance of the text for the researchers of Hellenistic Egypt. It provides the information on the nature and the peculiarities of interaction between Ptolemy II Philadelphus and the Egyptian elite. The text describes the gathering of its members at Sais organized by the king in order to bring the statue of Arsinoe II to Sais. According to a number of researchers, this might be an early case or a prototype of a synod, a special gathering of the Egyptian priesthood intended to discuss and to decide important issues in the development of the Ptolemaic dynastic cult.
