Green innovation is an effective way of solving the dilemma of the economy–environment trade-off. As an important innovation policy in China, national economic and technological development zones (NETDZs) play a significant role in promoting innovation, but empirical studies on their impact on innovation, especially green innovation, are scarce. In this study, the authors used highly disaggregated micro-level data such as patent data, industrial firm data, and customs data to examine the impact of NETDZs on green innovation. The results showed that: (1) NETDZs significantly promote green innovation, as measured by both patent quantity and patent quality; (2) the binding environmental indicators in China's five-year plan enhance the promotional effect of NETDZs on green innovation; (3) learning by importing, including through foreign direct investment and importing capital goods, is an important mechanism for the nexus between NETDZs and green innovation; and (4) compared with non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs), SOEs are relatively passive in terms of engaging in learning by importing.

This paper matches the large-scale survey data and the corresponding historical weather data to explore how air pollution impacts on low-carbon travel choices. The K-means algorithm is employed to cluster the personal characteristics of residents into five groups according to their travel behavior. The authors take ordered Logit models to identify the group differences in the impact of haze on the five types of low-carbon travel choices, combining with the theory of responsibility attribution and protection motivation theory. The results show that haze has a significant impact on the two groups, namely young office workers and students. The other three groups will not consider the influence of haze when choosing travel vehicles, travel distance, and travel time. The quantity of personally owned automobiles also has a significant impact on the group differences in low carbon travel choices. It is indicated that low carbon travel policies should be considered in the group differences in the future, and efforts should be made from supply and demand sides to guide residents to choose low-carbon travel.

The global wine-making industry has faced challenges due to the increasing demands of consumers, particularly in emerging markets such as China, Brazil, India, and Russia. Controlling the quality during wine production is one of the key challenges faced by global winemakers to produce wine with appropriate sensorial properties tailored to specific markets. The wine production quality is constituted from a number of environmental factors such as climate, soil, and temperature, which affect the sensorial properties and the overall quality. This paper proposed a rule-based quality analytics system (RBQAS) to capture physicochemical data during wine production and to investigate the hidden patterns from the data for quality prediction. It consists of IoT for data capture on a real-time basis, followed by association rule mining to identify relationships between sensorial and physicochemical properties of wine.

The three-dimensional (3D) mesh is moderately novel media type that realizes a rising success in various applications through data transfer via the Internet, which requires security approaches. Technological copyright protection of digital contents has become a challenging task in the current digital epoch. In this work, a robust watermarking algorithm of polygonal meshes for copyright protection purposes is proposed. The watermark insertion was achieved by quantization of the vertex norms variance in order to insert the watermark bits. In addition, this method is based on a blind detection scheme, so the watermark can be extracted without referring to the original mesh. The experimental results established the quality of the watermarked object as well as the inserted watermark robustness against various types of attacks, which were evaluated to prove the validity of the proposed algorithm. The results proved the proposed method efficiency in terms of robustness and imperceptibility against several signal processing distortions. A comparison with other reported method with similar purposes is also provided. The comparison depicted the outstanding robustness of the proposed method compared to the other reported method.

Organizations have increasingly invested money in information technology IT in order to improve their agility. It is generally believed that organizations with greater IT investment tend to be more agile to response to environmental changes. However, the issue of whether IT is an enabler or impeder of organizational agility still remains unresolved. Drawing upon resource-based view theory and the literatures of information systems and supply chain management, the authors develop and test a theoretical model that integrates IT capability, supply chain capability and organizational agility. The authors propose that IT capability enables the development of a higher level of supply chain capability which is embedded within inter-firm processes and in turn enhances organizational agility. Structural equation modelling is employed to test their theoretical conceptualization of 310 Australian fast-growth small-to-medium enterprises across different industrial sectors. The results show that IT capability does contribute to firm agility through enhancing inter-firm supply chain processes such as integration, information sharing and coordination. This research highlights the role of IT-enabled intermediated processes and the ways in which IT is used by firms to enhance core business processes.

Information technology outsourcing ITO has been a spotlight issue for global enterprises and previous studies have suggested that ITO research has expanded from one organization and bilateral partnerships to a global form of network organization. Yet, little research has been conducted on the link between network governance and ITO performance as a way to understand an organization's ITO efforts. This study proposes a model that employs several constructs: inter-organizational coordination, contractual governance and relational governance, and technological hegemony. The model explores the mediating roles of these governance mechanisms and the moderating role of technological hegemony as it influences the IT manager's perception of the performance of ITO. Empirical testing of the model is based on a sample of 191 companies from Taiwanese industries. The results support the mediating effect of relational governance and the moderating effect of technological hegemony. The model and results offer a perspective on managing the performance of ITO as well as initial insight into the role of technological hegemony.

Financial service companies, such as banks and accounting firms, and product software companies, such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) software companies, previously from discrete industries, are beginning to adopt Software-as-a-Service principles, potentially leading them into a new environment. The motivation for this research is to understand what is beginning to occur between these software and service industries, as a result of the convergence phenomenon. However, a similar phenomenon has already happened among the mobile and landline communications, computer, and TV broadcasting industries. Through reviewing and analyzing literature on the convergence phenomenon in the industries in which it has already developed, the main aspects are identified and integrated into one comprehensive framework with which to analyze the phenomenon as a whole. Their inter-relations and dynamics are explored via mobilization of institutional theory. The framework’s applicability is then explored against the historical case of the telecommunications, broadcast and computer industries. Future research suggestions are offered to further test and corroborate the framework to increase its generalizability and applicability for analyzing the convergence phenomenon in all industries experiencing it at different paces.

This study explores key factors affecting the usage of information technology IT tools in support of knowledge sharing in service organizations in Hong Kong. In a case study of five firms, the usage of IT tools is influenced by an array of factors acting as enablers, barriers, and motivators. The findings support extant theories on knowledge management KM. This research discovers relationships between multiple factors and the usage of IT tools for knowledge sharing at various hierarchical levels. Operational factors like perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, staff capability, and nature of work induce higher usage of IT for knowledge sharing. These findings and related analyses have managerial implications for firms engaging in service business.
