Sustainability in European luxury tourism companies: an analysis of practices and managerial perspectives 欧洲豪华旅游公司的可持续性:实践与管理视角分析

<h3>Purpose</h3><p>This paper aims to present findings from a preliminary study aimed at investigating sustainability practices and managerial perceptions within European luxury tourism companies. The study addressed two key research questions: What is the present state of sustainability practices in the luxury tourism sector? What are the managers' perspectives and the prevailing trends in the adoption of sustainable approaches?</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3><p>The study used a mixed methods approach to gather data from a diverse range of European luxury tourism companies. The survey and the interview of companies’ representatives encompassed various organisational types engaged in different tourism activities, allowing for a comprehensive exploration of sustainability practices within the sector. Organisational characteristics, such as size, turnover and location, were considered to ensure a representative sample.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Findings</h3><p>The findings of the study reveal a robust commitment to environmental, social and economic sustainability across the luxury tourism industry. Despite variations in organisational characteristics, including size, turnover and location, the study identified a lack of significant differences in sustainability practices, indicating a noteworthy homogeneity within the sector. The findings also show that a high percentage of companies hold sustainability certifications and share an emphasis on authenticity, local engagement and economic profitability.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Research limitations/implications</h3><p>The study's sample size may limit the generalisability of the findings. A larger sample size would enhance the study's robustness and allow for more comprehensive insights into sustainability practices within the luxury tourism sector. <h3>Purpose</h3><p>This study aims to provide insights and guidance for future research on service robot acceptance in the tourism and hospitality (T&H) domain through a comprehensive literature review.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3><p>A total of 249 journal articles, retrieved from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, were reviewed using an inductive analysis method.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Findings</h3><p>Since its emergence in 2008, the topic of robot acceptance has gained significant attention, especially after 2019. The research assesses the current state of research, methodologies used, theoretical foundations and antecedents influencing acceptance. Five categories of antecedents affecting acceptance were systematically identified: robot design factors, individual/organisational factors, situational factors, appraisal factors and affective factors.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Originality/value</h3><p>This study provides a comprehensive overview of the current landscape of service robot acceptance research. Carbon offset payment intentions in aviation industry: Altruism vs. Egoism and airline sustainability 航空业的碳补偿支付意向:利他主义与利己主义和航空公司的可持续发展

<h3>Purpose</h3><p>The issue of excessive carbon emissions continues to be a critical global challenge. As a prominent mode of transportation for long-distance travel, aircraft is widely acknowledged as a significant source of these emissions. Carbon offset initiatives function as ecological measures, helping to reduce the negative environmental impact. This study aims to explore how benefit appeals (BA) within the aviation industry impact tourists’ carbon offset payment intentions (COPIt).</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3><p>In Studies 1 and 2, scenario-based experiments were conducted to explore how goal framing (GF) and (BA) interact to influence COPIt. Study 2 further investigated the mediating roles of moral responsibility and trust in airlines within this interaction. Study 3 used real-world surveys to examine the moderating influence of moral elevation, thereby supporting the interactive effects and mediation mechanisms identified in the earlier studies.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Findings</h3><p>Across three studies, the authors consistently identified pivotal factors shaping COPIt in the context of air travel. Study 1 revealed that the combination of BA and GF significantly impacts COPIt, with egoistic appeals linked to loss framing and altruistic appeals connected to gain framing being particularly effective in encouraging COPIt. Study 2 extended these insights by showing that moral responsibility and trust in airlines serve as mediators between BA, GF and COPIt. In Study 3, moral elevation was found to moderate the influence of BA and GF on both moral responsibility and COPIt, deepening the understanding of these dynamics.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Originality/value</h3><p>This study expands the range of factors affecting COPIt and delves into the underlying mechanisms through which BA and GF shape COPIt. Additionally, it advances current understanding by revealing the intricate processes influenced by moral elevation. Purpose

The academic background of tourism marketing dates back to the 1960s. There had been a slight increase in its capacity until the early 1990s. However, since then, it has boomed, reaching thousands of scientific journal articles and tens of scientific books published only in English each year. Therefore, this study aims to present how tourism marketing has progressed academically within the past 60 years over four waves and how this progress may move forward as the next wave.

Design/methodology/approach

A bibliometric analysis grounds this study, which characterizes the past and present of tourism marketing research and anticipates the future. Content analysis, such as word clouds and social network analysis, was adopted to identify topic clusters and their connections. A total of 9,239 articles published between 1969 and 2024 were extracted from Scopus. Software packages such as VOSviewer were used to determine connections within topics.

Findings

The authors have assessed the findings broadly. Four waves were from the late 1960s to the first quarter of 2000. In spite of the limited size of papers at the early stage, the last wave saw a boom and a diversified number and category of subjects studied. In each wave, new subjects were added to broaden the picture.

Research limitations/implications

The discussion of findings is based only on those scientific papers published in English since 1969 but excludes the whole list of textbooks. Subsequent research should also consider all papers and textbooks released in different languages to have the broadest picture assessment worldwide.

Practical implications

The study conveys various suggestions for industry practitioners and policymakers to focus on carefully assessing trends in marketing tourism services and how these may be shaped shortly. This may help practitioners and policymakers redesign their services and marketing strategies in light of future developments.

Originality/value

This study continues a recent study published by Kozak (2023) that has been elaborated, particularly from the industry perspective. The current study examines the academic profile of all subjects investigated in the case of tourism marketing, but mainly in an academic sense. Accordingly, this paper outlines the facts and trends researchers may follow throughout the research frame published in the past six decades.

Purpose

People with visual impairments or blindness (PwVIB) are mostly excluded from tourism activities. Despite the rise of assistive technology (AT) solutions in Tourism, acceptance remains low because of the difficulty of providing the right functionality, effectiveness and usability. Arguably, it can be said that disability-oriented training can affect the latter two and, therefore, an AT solution’s acceptance. This paper aims to contribute to the theory development and conceptualization of technology acceptance of AT solutions in Tourism by studying, in the context of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), the effects of training PwVIB on using AT solutions. This study presents the effects of training on the tourism behavior of PwVIB and provides valuable information to the stakeholders.

Design/methodology/approach

Questionnaire data collected from 128 PwVIB after evaluating an AT were subjected to exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling followed by post-evaluation interviews. The used application, called BlindMuseumTourer, enables high-precision autonomous indoor navigation for PwVIB in tourist places like museums and places of health care.

Findings

The results of this study indicate the partial satisfaction of the extended model validating the importance of performance expectancy and training (the new factor) in predicting the behavioral intention of PwVIB tourists toward using ATs during their tourist activities. This suggests that practitioners have to provide performant technological solutions accompanied by special training sessions for improved engagement and satisfaction.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the UTAUT theory in the context of Tourism for PwVIB by adding a new factor and replacing two moderator variables. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no similar work is studying AT acceptance by PwVIB in the tourism literature. Furthermore, the validation process used a novel indoor navigation application, demonstrating its effectiveness in the Tactual Museum of Greece.

<h3>Purpose</h3><p>The purpose of this study is to examine the state of the literature related to the psychophysiological effects of travel, to identify gaps in the literature and to propose a vision to guide research between now and 2050.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3><p>The study was guided by a systematic literature review which started with more than 2,100 papers. The extant review and its findings are written in a conceptual nature with the concluding propositions, for the year 2050, guided by the systematic review and the authors’ personal knowledge.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Findings</h3><p>It was found that research related to the psychophysiological effects of travel has greatly progressed over the past two decades. Findings include evidence that travel reduces both perceived and actual stresses and that taking more vacations has the ability to make people healthier. The study also revealed that travel can have negative effects on physiological health. The overall results led to a call for research on the psychophysiological benefits of travel between now and 2050.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Research limitations/implications</h3><p>The systematic review of literature was limited to studies conducted in English and to studies that included the words “travel” or “tourism” and “benefits”, stress, “health” and “wellness”. Results provide a discussion of theories that should guide the research agenda.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Practical implications</h3><p>The review and proposed vision for research provide a detailed guide for researchers to follow. Should the proposed research come to fruition, tourism practitioners globally will have results to aid in engineering tourism experiences that could provide health benefits to visitors.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Social implications</h3><p>The proposed vision could have profound social implications, as the understanding of the positive and negative effects of travel should make travel experiences healthier for all. The study also proposes a call for research to determine ways to make the benefits of travel available to both the “haves” and “have nots” so that the benefits of travel can be more inclusive.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Originality/value</h3><p>The main contribution of this manuscript is that it proposes 11 propositions for research between now and 2050 based on a thorough review of gaps related to the psychophysiological benefits of travel. Purpose

Tourism faces a range of interconnected and potentially transformative global risks – collectively considered an evolving polycrisis – that have not been adequately defined and understood. As a result, the industry struggles to proactively anticipate and mitigate potential future challenges, while governments lack insight for strategic longer-term decision-making on tourism development. The purpose of this paper is to advance tourism sector consideration of global change threats and their complex interactions and more effectively incorporate these risks into tourism futures planning.

Design/methodology/approach

This conceptual gap is addressed through a discussion of the World Economic Forum’s Global Risk Reports, and their definition of environmental, economic, geopolitical, societal and technological risk categories. In applying results to tourism, a preliminary expert assessment of global risks serves as a foundational framework to incorporate potential global change threats more effectively into tourism futures planning and decision-making.

Findings

Additional research should be prioritized to examine global risks most influential of tourism, how and where they may interact, how to convert risk categories into measurable indicators and to evaluate whether risk assessments can contribute to mitigating the evolving polycrisis.

Originality/value

This paper discusses the systematic and strategic engagement with global risks for tourism, critically reviews the World Economic Forum’s Global Risk Reports from tourism perspective, presents key risk dimensions driving future tourism development, provides a foundational framework to further assess global risk for tourism and compels tourism academy to prioritize global change research agenda.

<h3>Purpose</h3><p>This study emphasizes the growing significance of destination attributes in shaping the experiences and behaviours of gastronomy and culinary tourists. Understanding both core and complementary attributes of a gastronomy tourism destination is crucial for its sustainable development. However, there is a lack of a reliable measurement for tourists’ perceived attributes of gastronomy tourism destinations (PAGTD). Understanding both core and complementary attributes of a gastronomy tourism destination is crucial for its sustainable development. However, there is a lack of a reliable measurement for tourists’ perceived attributes of gastronomy tourism destinations (PAGTD). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a scale to measure tourists’ PAGTD.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;!--/ Abstract__block --&gt;\u0000&lt;h3&gt;Design/methodology/approach&lt;/h3&gt;\u0000&lt;p&gt;The study systematically followed the scale development and validation process, using three samples (Sample 1, &lt;em&gt;n&lt;/em&gt; = 200; Sample 2, &lt;em&gt;n&lt;/em&gt; = 204; and Sample 3, &lt;em&gt;n&lt;/em&gt; = 204) to establish the psychometric properties of the proposed PAGTD scale.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;!--/ Abstract__block --&gt;\u0000&lt;h3&gt;Findings&lt;/h3&gt;\u0000&lt;p&gt;The validated scale comprises five dimensions, namely, food culture, food sensations, food cooking, service environment, and food price &amp; quality, encompassing a total of 22 measurement items.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;!--/ Abstract__block --&gt;\u0000&lt;h3&gt;Originality/value&lt;/h3&gt;\u0000&lt;p&gt;This research significantly contributes to the gastronomy tourism literature by elucidating the dimensionality of PAGTD and validating the PAGTD scale.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;!--/ Abstract__block --&gt;\u0000&lt;h3&gt;目标&lt;/h3&gt;\u0000&lt;p&gt;目的地属性对美食游客的体验和行为的影响日渐凸显。理解美食旅游目的地的核心属性和补充属性对目的地可持续发展至关重要。然而, 目前还缺乏一份测量游客感知的美食旅游目的地属性(PAGTD)的量表。因此, 本文旨在开发并验证游客感知的美食旅游目的地属性量表(PAGTD量表)。&lt;/p&gt;&lt;!--/ Abstract__block --&gt;\u0000&lt;h3&gt;设计/方法&lt;/h3&gt;\u0000&lt;p&gt;本文严格遵循量表开发与验证的程序, 利用三份样本(样本1, n=200; 样本2, n=204; 样本3, n=204)建立了PAGTD量表的信度和效度。&lt;/p&gt;&lt;!--/ Abstract__block --&gt;\u0000&lt;h3&gt;研究结果&lt;/h3&gt;\u0000&lt;p&gt;经过验证, PAGTD量表包括5个维度:美食文化、美食感官因素、美食烹饪、服务环境、美食价格与质量, 共计22个测项。&lt;/p&gt;&lt;!--/ Abstract__block --&gt;\u0000&lt;h3&gt;原创性/价值&lt;/h3&gt;\u0000&lt;p&gt;本文不仅阐明了游客感知的美食旅游目的地属性的多维结构, 还开发并验证了一份具有良好信效度的PAGTD量表。&lt;/p&gt;&lt;!--/ Abstract__block --&gt;\u0000&lt;h3&gt;Objetivo&lt;/h3&gt;\u0000&lt;p&gt;Este estudio hace hincapié en la creciente importancia de los atributos de los destinos a la hora de configurar las experiencias y los comportamientos de los turistas gastronómicos y culinarios. Comprender tanto los atributos principales como los complementarios de un destino turístico gastronómico es crucial para su desarrollo sostenible. Sin embargo, se carece de una medición fiable de los atributos percibidos por los turistas de los destinos de turismo gastronómico (PAGTD).
