Tourism in low-density and peripheral areas presents a paradox: while visitors seek sustainable, relaxing experiences, they often rely on high-emission private transport. This Special Issue brings together 13 papers that deepen our understanding of sustainable mobility in nonurban tourism. Contributions include conceptual frameworks, empirical analyses, and planning proposals. The first two sets of papers examine sustainability challenges in transport and the behavioral factors influencing tourists’ mobility choices. A third group presents grounded case studies with practical proposals, while a final set explores the interplay between tourism planning and infrastructure at the destination level. Collectively, these studies highlight sustainable mobility in rural tourism as both a critical challenge and a dynamic research frontier. Given the underdeveloped state of rural transport policy in many countries, especially regarding tourism, this Special Issue calls for ongoing research and targeted policy action to foster equitable, inclusive, and sustainable mobility that benefits both residents and visitors.

Understanding the processes that facilitate a desire to repeat a trip is crucial in explaining the motivational state and decision-making of future tourists. Psychologically satisfied individuals tend to positively evaluate their trip and return to the same place(s) when a post-trip desire arises. In this research, the satisfaction of autonomy, relatedness, and competence positively predicted the quality of a trip, which affected the desire to repeat the trip. Such desire further influenced temporal revisit intentions. Relationships between three fulfilled needs and temporal revisit intentions were serially mediated by the quality of a trip and the desire to repeat the trip. Indirect effects consistently existed regarding short-, medium-, and long-term revisit intentions. This research extended existing theorization by addressing research gaps in relation to the antecedents and consequences of a post-trip desire. Findings provide useful insights into designing and using experiential products and cues that facilitate the post-trip desire and visit.

Following the turbulences caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the tourism industry continues to be challenged by post-pandemic uncertainties. This study sought to explore travel risk perceptions and adaptive behavioural intention among Australian Generations Y and Z in the ‘new normal’. To achieve this, a conceptual framework was developed, integrating the Theory of Planned Behaviour, Protection Motivation Theory, and Risk-as-Feelings Theory, and was empirically examined using a dataset of 380 responses obtained from an online survey. The results of structural equation modelling supported the associations between cognitive-affective risk perceptions, attitude, subjective norms, coping appraisal, and adaptive behavioural intention. Furthermore, the findings confirmed the mediating roles of affective risk perception and coping appraisal and underscored the impact of generational differences on affective risk perception. Finally, theoretical and practical implications were discussed, together with limitations and future research directions.

We developed a causal conceptual framework from a social-psychological perspective to investigate whether cabin crews' mental health affects flight safety attitudes via emotion regulation toward coworkers. In addition, the moderating effect of behavioral activation systems (BAS) in linking emotion regulation to mental health is examined. Data were collected through a quantitative survey administered both online and face to face at major airports in Korea over 2 months (January–March 2025). A total of 249 valid responses from airline cabin crews were analyzed using SPSS 21 and AMOS 20. The results reveal that deep acting and relation-involved ambivalence positively influence mental health, whereas self-defensive ambivalence and surface acting negatively affect it. Mental health is also found to enhance flight safety attitudes, and the moderating effects of BAS are supported, except for SDA. This study demonstrates that flight safety attitudes are shaped by social psychological factors and also offers managerial implications.

As the number of tourism studies using the Stimulus–Organism–Response (S–O–R) framework increased, it is necessary to understand the structure of the S–O–R framework for tourism research. In the S–O–R framework, the Organism stimulated by travel experiences should have similar elements. This study aims to establish a three-stage Organism structure (cognitive evaluation, emotional feeling, and affective feeling) through a comprehensive literature review of 132 articles. An empirical study was conducted to validate this structure. The results confirm that the three-stage Organism structure consists of six components (image, value, emotion, flow, engagement, and satisfaction). This study offers a three-stage Organism structure for researchers' further studies, contributing to our knowledge in adopting the S–O–R framework in tourism research.

Travel partner seeking has become a new and increasingly popular social phenomenon, especially among young travelers. However, little is known about what partner attributes are preferred by this market and how such attributes impact memorable tourism experience, the desirable outcome of Internet companionship travel. This study employed a mixed-method approach to explore travel partner selection and its impact on memorable tourism experience. Using content analysis, study 1 identified four key attributes of ideal travel partners (emotional intelligence, travel experience, congruence, and conscientiousness) based on data from 1086 user posts on the Douban platform. Study 2 revealed that all four attributes of travel partners positively influenced memorable tourism experience through the mediation of travel partner exchange, with gender composition playing a moderating role. This work provides theoretical contributions and practical insights in travel partner selection.

This study aims to categorize 119 countries into homogeneous clusters using the Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) data, identifying performance levels and revealing strengths and weaknesses for strategic planning. Utilizing the K-means clustering method on 2024 TTDI data, the analysis resulted in seven main clusters of travel and tourism performance. Findings show that low-performing countries face challenges in enabling environments, infrastructure, and service quality, while some excel in natural and cultural resources. Medium performers need improvements in tourism policy and sustainability, whereas high-performing countries demonstrate strong infrastructure and sustainability metrics but have average performance in certain areas. The study provides crucial insights for developing international tourism policies, helping countries enhance their competitiveness in the travel sector. By offering valuable information, the research facilitates strategic planning and highlights opportunities for low-performing nations, ultimately aiming to improve overall sustainability and competitiveness in the global tourism landscape.

This study aimed to address the concerns by examining noise fluctuations in hotel guestrooms, reporting overall noise levels, and evaluating the value guests place on in-room noise control. In Study 1, noise variations were measured in guestrooms from three distinct hotel locations while occupants engaged in typical nighttime activities such as sleeping and walking. Field measurements revealed average noise levels (Leq over 10 h) ranging from 32.5 dB(A) in suburban hotels to 36.6 dB(A) in urban areas, and 42 dB(A) near interstate highways. Study 2 complemented these findings that examined hotel guests' willingness to pay for a fully noise-controlled room. The results indicated that age was correlated with noise perception, and that Noise Avoiders and Dodgers were significantly more likely than Takers to pay a 10% premium for noise-controlled accommodation. These findings highlight a market opportunity for hotel managers to implement a premium pricing strategy based on noise controls.

This study explores how interactive technology can enhance mindfulness in health tourism through the HU device—a biofeedback tool that synchronizes vapor with users' breathing. Traditional mindfulness practices often face barriers of accessibility, engagement, and adaptability, especially in tourism contexts. To address this, a qualitative study with 25 participants examined the device's integration into a health retreat. Findings indicate that embodied engagement with vapor, a non-judgmental interaction mode, and seamless technological integration supported deeper focus, emotional resilience, and calmness. Portability further enabled continued use as a travel companion, extending mindfulness beyond retreat settings. Framed within the proposed model of Sensory Experience, Behavioral Reflection, Technological Integration, and Practical Accessibility, the study shows how digital tools can enrich embodied mindful experiences. Rather than distracting, mindful technologies can serve as valuable facilitators of well-being, positioning health tourism as a setting where sustained mindfulness engagement is both accessible and adaptable.

This study explores the mechanisms enhancing users' intention to recommend their mobile travel app use. By drawing on innovation diffusion theory and social exchange theory, it offers a comprehensive framework for understanding how user perceptions and the trade-offs between positive and negative aspects of mobile travel app usage shape engagement and subsequent recommendation intentions. The study also sheds light on omnichannel strategies and highlights their relevance to tourism service research. A total of 387 valid responses from travel app users were analyzed through partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that innovation characteristics substantially affect perceived benefits, which in turn foster high-quality relationships and lead to recommendations. Moreover, practical insights are provided on how best to manage both positive and negative factors, thereby strengthening relationships with mobile travel app users and enhancing their willingness to recommend the app to others.
