The meaning of life has preoccupied the minds of many throughout the ages. In this article, the authors turn to their respective disciplines (literature and philosophy) and provide an interdisciplinary reflection on this fundamental concern. The claim that is made is that life presents us with a challenge: it can become a ‘sentence’ on us or it can be regarded as ‘a series of sentences’ which contain a message. However, just as in grammar, it is necessary to insert the proper punctuation marks to be able to make sense of the grouping of words in a sentence, so in life it is important to create ‘punctuating moments’ to facilitate the reading of life’s message. The paper makes use of lessons that can be drawn from the study of literature and philosophy in understanding and interpreting the human quest for meaning in life. It also shows how religion can have a positive contribution to this task. Article in English

In the year 2008 Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) has initiated undergraduate studies quality survey. The intention of this idea – to conduct a survey among VGTU undergraduates and according to survey results to provide problematic study quality areas. It is more than ten years when Bologna Process lasts in Europe. The Process stimulates European Universities to make a deeper look at study quality which is one of the most actual present problems of both Lithuania and other European Union countries. Main goals of Bologna Process are: to create European Higher Education Area, provide Europe with a broad, high-quality and advanced knowledge base, and ensure the further development of Europe as a stable, peaceful and tolerant community. Following this concept VGTU which was top second university in Lithuania in the year 2010 traces to milestones held by Bologna Process. The article is based on survey conducted among VGTU undergraduates. The goal of the survey: to analyse problematical areas of undergraduate studies and professors. The aim of this article – to identify these problematical areas and provide with survey data and interpretation. Article in Lithuanian

At university level students face demanding tasks of reading an enormous amount of professional materials in English. Writing various assignments is another challenging part of higher education. Online activities are the priority for conducting assignments at tertiary level. Students usually start doing the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course before learning subject-matters of the future profession, i.e. in their first year. The cornerstone of the ESP is unfamiliar lexis and numerous concepts of subject-matter. In order to succeed, students need to develop proficiency in reading professional texts and writing skillfully on relevant subject issues. The aim of this paper is to study, first, learners‘ attitudes to online reading of professional materials as well as to writing various assignments online and, second, to examine learners‘ self-assessment of proficiency in these skills. Our research employed brief written surveys designed in accordance with the standards in Social Sciences, which were administered to the students doing the ESP course, and the verbal data obtained during individual interviews intended to assess learners‘ success and achievements throughout the academic year. The respondents were the students specializing in psychology at Mykolas Romeris University, Vilnius, Lithuania. All the participants were unanimous in the importance of writing and reading skills for the ESP tasks. 100% of respondents support reading professional materials, and 80% of respondents support exercising online writing. Self-assessment of reading proficiency demonstrates that 90% of students believe they possess very good or good skills of reading, and 70% of learners are sure of their good skills in writing. Respondents’ performance in these skills is less impressive. Some recommendations towards perfecting students’ proficiency in “read-to-write-tasks” are suggested. It is important to help learners develop better rates of reading and learn to employ metacognitive strategies in writing. Article in English

There are printing trade terms from the International Words’ Dictionary of 1936 (com. K. Boruta, Pr. Cepėnas, A. Sirutytė-Cepėnienė) considered in this article. The article analyses the background of printing trades’ terms. The definitions of printing trade terms in the International Words’ Dictionary of 1936 are compared with terms of the International Words’ Dictionary (2007), compiled by V. Vaitkeviciūtė. The article also investigates contemporary Lithuanian equivalents of terms presented in the overviewed dictionary. There are loanword evaluation levels presented according to “Kalbos patarimai” (4). The International Words’ Dictionary of 1936 is a hard background for later international words’ dictionaries. There is an authentic language of IWD (1936) and publications introduced in the work. Of all human race about 8% of males and 0,5% of females are colour-blind. It is estimated that in 2011 or 2012 there will be around 2 billion Internet users worldwide, so the number of colour-blind Internet users can reach about 200 million. Authors of this publication analyse issues that arise for colour-blind persons on the Internet and deliver the ways to make the Internet more comfortable. The special software is proposed as one of the ways together with comparison of its advantages. Article in Lithuanian

The present article is a survey of Modern English computing terminology with focus on ways of terminological word-formation, structural and semantic peculiarities of the terms and their motivation. The anglysis centers around such characteristics as activity, productivity, occurrence, type of lexico-semantic category to distinguish features that prove the system character of computing terminology. Terms for analysis were taken from different English and Lithuanian general and special dictionaries, course books, as well as texts in computing. Understanding computing terms structural and semantic specific features will facilitate teaching and improve academic performance. Article in English

This paper aims at analyzing learners’ attitudes to weblogs and wikis which are common for communication in the networked world. The present investigation into application of wikis in English classes is compared with our previous research into weblogging. Our findings show that the experience of online writing for the audience provides an important opportunity for improving writing skills. Learners’ attitudes to weblogs and wikis are examined and a possible practical implication is indicated. Article in English

The article deals with a number of relevant methodological issues. First of all, the author analyses psychological peculiarities of dialogic speech and states that the dialogue is the product of at least two persons. Therefore, in this view, dialogic speech, unlike monologic speech, happens impromptu and is not prepared in advance. Dialogic speech is mainly of situational character. The linguistic nature of dialogic speech, in the author’s opinion, lies in the process of exchanging replications, which are coherent in structural and functional character. The author classifies dialogue groups by the number of replications and communicative parameters. The basic goal of dialogic speech teaching is developing the abilities and skills which enable to exchange replications. The author distinguishes two basic stages of dialogic speech teaching: 1. Training of abilities to exchange replications during communicative exercises. 2. Development of skills by training the capability to perform exercises of creative nature during a group dialogue, conversation or debate. Article in Lithuanian

The paper does not suggest an outline of a comprehensive theory of existential spatiality. Its aim is much moderate – to reveal those aspects of the constitution of meaning within the totality of being in the world which delineate the scope of the problematic under investigation. Since these aspects are addressed by various kinds of constitutional analysis of meaning, a special effort is devoted to overcoming discrepancies among three basic phenomenological discourses – hermeneutic phenomenology, existential psychiatry, and phenomenology of corporeity.
