Cultural diversity in secondary school: the response to immigrant students in Spain from a counselling perspective 中学文化多样性:从咨询角度对西班牙移民学生的回应

ABSTRACT Managing cultural diversity remains a challenge in secondary schools in Spain. In this paper, we approach cultural diversity from the standpoint of school counsellors, who are key professionals attending to immigrant pupils. Through the use of qualitative research techniques (semi-structured interviews and discussion groups), the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats are identified by counsellors. The findings show the need to implement pupil-focused responses sensitive to their cultural identity and based on the collaboration of all agents involved. Likewise, the school is defined as a privileged setting in which to celebrate cultural diversity and the pivotal role that counsellors play in this process is highlighted.

ABSTRACT The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationships among life satisfaction, meaning in life and basic psychological need satisfaction. Participants were 384 college students. Balanced Measure of Psychological Needs Scale, Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Satisfaction with Life Scale and demographic information form were utilised for data collection. Data were analysed using mixture structural equation modelling approach. Results of the study indicated that fulfilling competence and autonomy need is indirectly related to life satisfaction through meaning in life. Additionally, need for relatedness and autonomy satisfaction and meaning in life is directly associated with life satisfaction. Findings suggest two latent profiles: (a) a high satisfied and meaningful group and (b) a low satisfied and low meaningful group.

ABSTRACT This content analysis provides an overview of articles on collaboration between counselling professionals and school personnel published in the 21 American Counseling Association (ACA) journals over the last 15 years. In addition to the number of collaboration-specific articles published each year during this time period, other content areas such as authorship and institutional contributors; type of article, methodology of empirical research, and application settings; target populations; and topics of focus are identified. Recommendations for counselling scholars are provided.

Career guidance supports individuals and groups to discover more about work, leisure and learning and to consider their place in the world and plan for their futures. Key to this is developing individual and community capacity to analyse and problematise assumptions and power relations, to network and build solidarity and to create new and shared opportunities. It empowers individuals and groups to struggle within the world as it is and to imagine the world as it could be. Career guidance can take a wide range of forms and draws on diverse theoretical traditions. But at its heart it is a purposeful learning opportunity which supports individuals and groups to consider and reconsider work, leisure and learning in the light of new information and experiences and to take both individual and collective action as a result of this. Using phenomenology in careers research: student experiences of unpaid work 在职业研究中运用现象学:无薪工作的学生经历

ABSTRACT Career guidance has been criticised for focusing on individual agency, complying with discourses that “responsibilise” individuals to manage their careers. A social justice approach argues for a more nuanced recognition of the interplay of structure and agency, which raises questions about how to do this in practice? In this paper we argue for the value of interpretive phenomenology which challenges what is taken-for-granted, illuminates the nature of shared experience and enables a deeper understanding of individuals within their environment. Through interviews with higher education students and recent graduates, we illustrate how experiences of unpaid work are intricately interwoven with biography, relationships, location and resources over time. We illustrate how a . pragmatic phenomenological approach offers valuable theoretical tools for socially just guidance practice and research.

ABSTRACT The purpose of career guidance includes the support of citizens’ agency. In this article, we develop a framework for analysing the internal structure of agency within career guidance theory. This framework is inspired by relational sociology. The approach is used in an analysis of two contemporary career guidance theories: the systems theory framework (STF) and life-design counselling (LDC). The analyses show that the practical-evaluative dimension of agency in the two theories can be honed. This dimension of agency explores responses to current demands and contingencies. We conclude that the proposed approach was constructive in developing a deeper understanding of the conceptualisation of agency in career guidance theory.

ABSTRACT Many researchers have drawn attention to the importance of intersectionality and anti-racism in career guidance, but literature thus far contains few practical examples of how to go about dismantling ethnic and racial normativities that shape educational and labour market transitions. The aim of this article is to deepen the understanding of anti-racist and intersectional career guidance by presenting the results of a study which analysed 22 interviews with counsellors, who work among ethnic and/or racialised minorities and recognise a need to tackle societal inequalities. The study gives examples of critical practices as well as underlines the importance of mainstreaming intersectionality and the advocacy on behalf of oppressed minorities in the guidance practices and ethical guidelines of the profession.

ABSTRACT We examine a focus group with eight Portuguese psychologists (four career counsellors) on two quantitative studies' results focused on the psychosocial consequences of unemployment/precarity/uncertainty, exploring how do they: give meaning to the results, perceive their professional role, and think that socio-political issues influence their practice. Data were analysed through thematic social-constructionist and critical discourse analyses. Two themes (the construction of the “employable individual” and the limits of psychology), and two discourses (the hegemonic psychological discourse reflecting neoliberal discourses and adaptation to the labour market and “the social context is an aggressor” highlighting socio-political/economic roots of psychological ailments) were identified. We aim to foster a reflection on socially-just practices within career counselling, and to promote people’s agency/conscientisation/emancipation and career development.

Examining career transition narratives through the lens of social justice: a critical study of the British Press 通过社会正义的视角审视职业转型叙事:对英国新闻界的批判性研究

ABSTRACT In this article we examine the print media portrayal of career transitions by adapting Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. The aim is to explore and critically analyse the newspaper articles published in The Times, Guardian, and Daily Mail between 1985 and 2015, the same time span in which career development theories started to get public attention. In particular, we answer the question of how the language used by journalists influences assumptions about personal agency in career development. Assessing the similarities and differences of the dominant academic discourses and the social characteristic of the press provides a setting to draw conclusions about the social implications of career theories.

Empowering newcomer workers by addressing racism and xenophobia: a promising pilot 通过解决种族主义和仇外心理赋予新工人权力:一个有前途的试点

ABSTRACT Though immigrant employment gaps are typically articulated as newcomer skill-deficits, evidence suggests structural oppression and intercultural ignorance creates greater barriers to newcomers’ success. In this article we describe a project in a small Canadian city that flipped the dominant narrative to confront xenophobia and racism through intercultural intelligence interventions with local employers. By positioning newcomers as reverse mentors, the project disrupted typical power relationships, empowering newcomers with a platform and tools to voice their experiences and directly address structural inequity in the labour market. Their expertise and abilities were validated through the project and by employers. In this paper we outline the implementation, outcomes, challenges and future opportunities for incorporating similar approaches in existing newcomer-employment strategies to further the voices of, and empower, newcomer jobseekers.
