Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral infection, has been a growing global health concern with significant morbidity and mortality. Among the myriad complications that Dengue can manifest, fluid leakage syndrome has emerged as a particularly severe and challenging aspect of the disease. This case study delves into the prevalence of heart failure in patients who not only suffer from Dengue but also concurrently experience fluid leakage syndrome. Through an analysis of clinical data, patient histories, diagnostic criteria, and treatment outcomes, we explore the intricate relationship between these two conditions and their impact on the cardiovascular system. Our findings shed light on the complexities of managing these co-morbid conditions and explore the need for enhanced clinical approaches and awareness in addressing this dual health burden. This case study aims to contribute to the broader understanding of the interplay between Dengue, fluid leakage syndrome, and heart failure, with the ultimate goal of improving patient care and outcomes in such challenging clinical scenarios.

Parasites are among the main agents of the diseases from which mankind suffers. The parasitology laboratory plays an important role in the diagnosis of parasitic disease. One of its main challenges is to achieve, maintain and improve the accuracy, reliability and speed of its analyses. However, only good quality management in the laboratory will enable these objectives to be achieved and reliable results to be delivered. The pre-analytical phase covers all stages from the medical prescription, through sampling, routing, reception, non-conformity analysis, recording, pre-treatment and storage, right up to the analysis of the sample in the laboratory [3]. A number of requirements need to be taken into account in order to master all the stages of this process, over which the biologist has little control, as a significant proportion takes place outside the laboratory. In the present work, we have highlighted the importance and complexity of the pre-analytical phase in parasitology. We have identified and described the various sub-processes involved in this phase, namely: prescription, timing of sampling, its stages, routing, reception and storage. We have also described the main investigations that can be carried out on each type of sample in the various parasitology laboratories in general, and in our laboratory in particular.

The reutilization of services in outpatient clinics of hospitals plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality and effectiveness of healthcare services. This study aims to analyze the factors associated with service reutilization in hospital outpatient clinics using a cross-sectional design and quantitative approach. Data were collected through questionnaires from 100 respondents at Dewi Sartika General Hospital in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, during October-November 2023, using accidental sampling techniques. The analysis results indicate that factors such as service quality, family encouragement, facilities, location, and patient attitudes are significantly associated with service reutilization in outpatient clinics. Univariate analysis was used to describe sample and variable characteristics, while bivariate analysis involved correlation testing to evaluate the relationships among variables. The conclusion of this study highlights the importance of enhancing communication, education, and family support in influencing patient decisions to reuse the same services at the hospital. The development of family support programs, patient empowerment, family-friendly policies, and periodic program evaluations are crucial steps in improving patient experiences and healthcare outcomes. Recommendations include critical steps such as enhancing communication, education, and family support, as well as developing structured family support programs, empowering patients, implementing family-friendly policies, and conducting regular program evaluations. It is expected that the implementation of these recommendations will improve patient experience, enhance adherence to treatment, and overall improve healthcare outcomes.

Background: Antipsychotic medications treat neuropsychiatric disorders like Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorder. Despite their symptom management benefits, they carry cardiovascular risks. Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring is crucial for detecting abnormalities. This research aims to identify and understand these risks, aiding healthcare professionals in implementing effective monitoring for better patient outcomes. Methods: A retrospective study on subjects who are patients on Antipsychotic medications from the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH). Results: In a study with 100 patients on antipsychotic medications, 68% displayed abnormal ECG changes during treatment, while 32% had normal patterns. Left Ventricular Hypertrophy (LVH) and Atrial Enlargements were common, affecting 30% and 26% respectively, while QT interval prolongation was rare (2%). Risperidone, Sodium Valproate, and Trihexyphenidyl showed the most abnormal ECG changes, whereas Olanzapine, Fluoxetine, and Escitalopram were relatively safer. Conclusion: ECG monitoring is an essential component of the management of patients on antipsychotic drugs. It enables the early detection of QT interval prolongation and other cardiac abnormalities, allowing for timely interventions and personalized treatment plans. Our study showed just 2% of the patient had QT interval prolongation, however Left Ventricular Hypertrophy was a common finding in the ECG of the patients, 30%.

This review article provides a comparison of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) versus open cholecystectomy (OC) for the treatment of gallbladder disease. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, characterized by its minimally invasive approach, has gained popularity over open cholecystectomy due to its perceived advantages in safety, reduced postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, improved cosmesis, and potential cost savings. However, the choice between the two procedures remains subjective and depends on various factors such as patient characteristics, surgical expertise, and specific clinical scenarios. This review synthesizes current evidence from clinical trials and studies to aid clinicians in making informed decisions regarding the selection of the most appropriate surgical approach for individual patients.

The use of synthetic insecticides has become widespread and useful for decades. However, due to not being eco- friendly and development of resistance in these organisms plants natural products essential oil components have shown significant potentials for insect control. Hence, laboratory bioassays were conducted to investigate bio-efficacy of Chenopodium ambrosioides L: (Chenopodiaceae) essential oil on adult Callosobruchus maculatus F. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). On the basis of 24 hr and 48 hr median lethal toxicity (L50). Essential oil of C. ambrosioides was toxic on C. maculatus adults at 0.50 Mg/m2 and 0.20 Mg /m2 in 24 hr Lc50. Also 48 hr Lc99 values obtained show that essential oil of tested plant was 0.90 Mg/m2 and 0.18 Mg/ m2 toxic on adult C. maculatus. The study shows that essential oil of C. ambrosioides have potentials as fumigants for protecting cowpea from damage of C. maculatus

Background: First-generation antipsychotics are dopamine receptor antagonists, while second-generation atypical antipsychotics are serotonin-dopamine antagonists. Aim: The study aims to compare the effectiveness of current anti-psychotic drugs in treating schizophrenia, focusing on their correlation with responsiveness rates in positive, negative, and psychopathological symptoms. Methods: The study focuses on schizophrenia-spectrum disorders in adults and elderly psychiatric patients at the Princess Aisha Bint Al Hussein Medical Centre. The study will assess the initial severity of patients and evaluate the therapeutic effectiveness of four categorical-based oral and LA-APDs: older oral drugs, older oral and depot drugs, newer oral drugs, and newer oral and depot drugs. The reduction percentages in each component will be monitored, and a Chi Square test will be performed to analyze other variables. Pearson or spearman correlations will be used to explore correlation values. Results: Upon aggregating the various symptom categories into a unified score using the Positive and Negative Scoring Scale (PANSS), this study revealed that 63.7% of patients exhibited a positive response, whereas 36.7% of patients did not respond favourably. This equated to 110 out of 303 patients responding, compared to 193 patients who did not respond. The Pearson and Spearman correlations exhibited a statistically significant positive relationship, with values of +0.581±0.038 and +0.574±0.040, respectively (χ 2=131.885, p-value=0.000). Conclusion: Our study concluded that Psychopathological symptom therapy and patient adherence improved significantly. The efficiency of pleasant symptoms decreased significantly, whereas negative symptoms increased slightly.

Background: Assessing elderly ambulatory patients at risk of osteoporotic fractures is crucial for achieving appropriate functioning, including daily activities, rehabilitation, lifestyle improvements, and dietary optimization. Aim: This study focuses on evaluating bone health and comorbidities in patients to predict osteoporotic fracture functionality, using multiple logistic regression and comparing cohorts for optimal operating points. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted at Prince Rashid bin Al-Hasan Military Hospital, Jordan, to examine the correlations and quality of patients' functionality statuses based on Age-adjusted Charlson Co-Morbidity Index (AACCI) and femoral hip bone mineral density (fH_BMD). The study categorized patients into two cohorts, with functional grades ranging from III-IV to I-II. The results were analyzed using statistical tests and confidence intervals. Results: A Multiple Logistic Regression model was developed to simulate the relationship between patients' Age-adjusted Charlson Co-Morbidity Index (AACCI) and femoral hip bone mineral density (fH_BMD) and their functionality statuses. The model was statistically significant, explaining variation in the dependent variable from 30%-40.2% depending on the reference method. It correctly classified 78.2% of cases, with the explained variation ranging from 30%-40.2% depending on the method used. Conclusion: A small, non-sponsored study found an exponential association between patients' femoral bone mineral density and their functionality status, with this correlation shifting to the right when the Age-adjusted Charlson Co-Morbidity Index is ≥4.

The model was statistically significant, explaining variation in the dependent variable from 30%-40.2% depending on the reference method. It correctly classified 78.2% of cases, with the explained variation ranging from 30%-40.2% depending on the method used. Conclusion: A small, non-sponsored study found an exponential association between patients' femoral bone mineral density and their functionality status, with this correlation shifting to the right when the Age-adjusted Charlson Co-Morbidity Index is ≥4.","PeriodicalId":23738,"journal":{"name":"World Journal of Biology Pharmacy and Health Sciences","volume":"16 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140419937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Background/aim: It is well-established that the use of corticosteroidal agents in patients with Ear-Nose-Throat infections can lead to an increased risk of infection recurrence, while also potentially prolonging the duration of the infection. It is crucial to ensure a proper equilibrium between the advantages and drawbacks of the corticosteroidal agent. This study investigates the effects of corticosteroids on specific subsets of immune cells in patients admitted to the Ear-Nose-Throat department with infections. Methods: This study was conducted retrospectively from March 2020 to September 2021. The variables that were measured and calculated were categorised into parametric and non-parametric data. The parametric data were compared between the two groups, Non-Dexamethasone Cohort (Cohort I) and Dexamethasone Cohort (Cohort II), using Independent, One-Sample T-Tests, and Chi-Square Test. Results: The average age of the entire study cohort was 59.40±10.60 years. There was a slightly higher proportion of males compared to females, with a ratio of approximately 2.309:1. The haematological analysis revealed a decrease in the levels of white blood cells, absolute neutrophils, monocytes, and the monocytes to lymphocytes ratio in Cohort I when compared to Cohort II. The levels of prognosticator biomarkers and their ratios were significantly lower in Cohort I when compared to Cohort II. Cohort II exhibited a significantly reduced hospital length of stay and a lower mortality rate among admitted infected patients in the ear-nose-throat infection, in comparison to Cohort I. Conclusion: Our analysis determined that Dexamethasone 6 mg/day provides a substantial survival advantage for patients with higher baseline risk upon admission. This benefit is associated with a decrease in the counts of neutrophils and monocytes, as well as a decrease in the ratio of these counts to lymphocyte count.
