The reading of Aluísio Azevedo’s novels led many critics to consider that this Brazilian novelist had a very strong anti-Portuguese bias. This study aims to correct this assessment, based on the analysis of the biography of the writer from Maranhão (1857-1913). Son of Portuguese parents, he lived his childhood and adolescence in a patriarchal and slave society, dominated by Portuguese, Luso-Brazilian traders and by the rural oligarchy and the ultramontane Church. Self-taught, but raised in an educated family, he completed his training in Rio de Janeiro as a journalist and caricaturist, before asserting himself as a writer. He was greatly influenced by Portuguese intellectuals and writers, such as Ramalho Ortigão, Eça de Queirós, Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho and by the caricaturist Bordalo Pinheiro, whom he met in Rio de Janeiro and with whom he would maintain friendly relations throughout his life. In Rio de Janeiro, the author actively participated in the promotion of the work of Eça de Queirós, before asserting himself as the promoter of Naturalism in Brazil. For ten years, Azevedo was, alongside Ferreira de Araújo and Machado de Assis, one of the main activists in favor of signing a Portuguese-Brazilian copyright agreement that guaranteed equality and reciprocity between Brazilian and Portuguese authors.Thus, the letters sent to friends and quoted in this article deny the accusations of anti-Lusitanist by the author of O Mulato, Casa de Pensão and O Cortiço.

The text aims to draw attention to a novel that has gone completely unnoticed by criticism, relegated to oblivion. Even though its author, a Northeastern woman, was known at that time for another aspect of her work, the more political one, the novel, published in 1965, has not yet received the reading worthy of what it raises. This may be explained by the engendering of the questions posed, both concerning the feminine condition, and the narrative and discursive relationships. I try, then, to underline the labyrinthine exploration of time, semantic games, metaphorical inflections, improprieties, metonymic employment, etc., which could have given it the prominent place of a vanguard narrative.

Between the 1930s and 1940s, the Brazilian poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade (1902-1987) produced a type of engaged literature, under the strong influence of socialist ideas, in a political key that would mark his verses until the end of the Second World War. This position, rare among Brazilian poets, seems to reflect the ideological climate of the time, converging with the position of many European authors linked to international communism. In this article we explore the points of contact between Drummond’s production in this period and the engaged literature that emerged in Spain and Portugal at the same time, influenced by the Spanish Civil War and the Portuguese neorealist movement. The convergence of themes, jargon and images invites us to reflect on the ideological conflict that Europe was experiencing at the time and the extent of its influence in the countries of Latin America.

The paper aims to examine the transformative role of art and artists, today and in the future. We have chosen as a starting point the work of a remarkable Portuguese sculptor at the leading edge: Rui Chafes, a challenger of new aesthetic paths. Chafes is a conceptual sculptor of iron and fire who seeks and aspires to abstractionism, as a novel language and a novel vision of the world. The artist thinks his work deeply, regularly publishing texts about his work and its connections with art, beauty and life. From his imaginary artistic biography, Between Heaven and Earth, a bit like Vasari’s The Lives, we will begin by presenting the sculptor’s aesthetic and plastic universe. Then we will consider the way his unique identity path turns out to be inspiring and fulfilling. This imaginary character, born in Germany in the 13th century, absorbed the spiritual medieval gothic shapes and the sense of nature, the sublime and the absolute spirit, peculiar to German Romanticism. From his long experience we highlight learning the value of life, and the love for here and now, both rooted in a density of experiences and memories; memories, places and times which interact and dialogue with his sculptures — works which cralise the spaces they inhabit as if they had always been part of them. For Rui Chafes the future of humankind depends on our ability to incorporate memory and the past into the present, and in this sense his project is a very original and promising alliance between tradition and modernity.

Catholicism, deeply rooted in Spain until nowadays, made the heterodoxies that Protestants and Masons represented in modern times build bridges of collaboration among them, when the legal framework for freedoms allowed it, in their fight against the common enemy which was the Church of Rome. Studies observe that this was a fact, above all from 1868 until the beginning of the last civil war (1936) when there was a regime of tolerance and, promptly, religious freedom, within the constitutional frame. The close relationship between Masons and Protestants was seen in some common projects: in the commitment to an ideology of liberalism that was more progressive, democratic and even republican (supporters of religious freedom), the fight for a secular school or at least neutral in religious matters, outreach to the less favoured sectors of society, etc. However, concerning the number of Protestants framed in the ranks of Freemasonry, studies — still partial — show that the number was low possibly due to the also limited number of followers that had the different reformed churches in Spain.

This paper aims to present an analysis of Portuguese language use as the official language of the Portuguese colonial state, in confrontation with the linguistic diversity of colonized countries, especially Angola. To this end, the short story «Mestre Tamoda», by the writer Uanhenga Xitu, will be analyzed to exemplify and discuss linguistic attitudes of African speakers of Portuguese. In addition, the role of Portuguese public language policies and the processes (attempts) of annihilation and abolition of autochthonous African languages will be analyzed, as well as the way in which the Portuguese language was promoted and served as an instrument of colonial power’s oppression. In the African text in question, we can observe the violent process by which autochthonous subjects were submitted in favor of the implementation of a series of political measures that «sold» the idea of civilization, but that extinguished or tried to diminish manifestations of local cultures and languages. Tamoda builds his identity by seeking, through copying the colonizer’s habits and customs, a place in society. In the Portuguese-speaking context, this «invention of citizenship» took place by subverting the idea that it is the invaded who must accept and adapt to the «local» values of the invader and not the other way around. Thus, language and culture could not only be imposed, but they would also have to offer a hope of ascension and entry into citizenship. These sophisticated public policies have made and would make the modern project of governance viable, through the imposition of disciplinary instruments, such as the promotion of the Portuguese language.

The article analyzes the way the female characters appear in the book A Filosofia na alcova of Marquis de Sade. It highlights the author’s recurrent themes, such as space, private life and freedom, relating them to the discussion about the role of women during the eighteenth century in France. Such a thematic-spatial option analyzes, therefore, points that were not thoroughly studied and that, for a long time, were only considered in addendums within the studies about the French post-revolutionary context. The discussion is part of the theoretical intersection between History and Literature, using as reference the works of Georges Bataille, Michele Perrot, Eliane Robert Moraes and Lynn Hunt.
