This study examined the relationship between social media use and high-risk sexual behaviour among tertiary institution students in Kwara State, Nigeria. A total of 561 students were selected by using stratified sampling technique. Data was collected with an instrument titled: Social Media and High-Risk Sexual Behaviour Questionnaire (SMHRSBQ). The measure of central tendency (mean) and mean average were used to determine levels of social media use and involvement in high-risk sexual behaviour. The Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation and One-Way ANOVA Statistics were used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. The Mean Average of responses on social media use was 3.19 while that of high-risk sexual behaviour was 2.83 indicating high levels on both variables among tertiary institution students respectively. Relationship between social media use and high-risk sexual behaviour was significant (p=0.00); no significant difference in social media use and high-risk sexual behaviour based on institution type (University=0.61; Polytechnic=0.13; College of Education=0.06: University=0.11; Polytechnic=0.16; College of Education=0.21) respectively. It was concluded that high use of social media predisposes students to high-risk sexual behaviour. School guidance counsellors should organise seminars periodically to sensitise students on the association between social media use and high-risk sexual behaviour.

Abstract : Sustainable development is a “durable development” that is systematic and long-term devel-opment of countries ensuring strong relationship between societal and environmental security with economic progress. The concept of sustainable development is essential for pre-service teachers to realize because the country is on its way to progress and industrialization and their role as future teach-ers is important. Hence, this paper investigates aims to determine pre-service teachers’ concept of sus-tainable development. It is important that the concept of sustainable development should be clear to teachers because it determines how effective they can teach the concept to their students. A qualitative research design utilizing questionnaires, interviews, and focused group discussions reveal the miscon-ceptions of the pre-service teachers on sustainable development. The result of the present research will be utilized to create a program that will assist them in preparing lessons that integrates the concept of sustainable development successfully. Oleh karena itu, tulisan ini menelaah konsep pembangunan berkelanjutan calon guru. Sangatlah penting bahwa konsep pembangunan berkelanjutan calon guru harus sangat jelas karena hal itu menentukan seberapa efektif mereka dapat mengajarkan konsep kepada siswa mereka. Sebuah desain penelitian kualitatif menggunakan kuesioner, wawancara, dan diskusi kelompok terfokus mengungkapkan kesalahpahaman dari guru calon pada konsep pemba-ngunan berkelanjutan. Hasil dari penelitian ini akan digunakan untuk membuat sebuah program yang akan membantu mereka dalam mempersiapkan pelajaran yang mengintegrasikan konsep pembangunan berkelanjutan dengan berhasil. Abstract : This study aims at investigating the rhetorical pattern of research articles introductions in Islam-related research articles published in Indonesia. The data of this study are taken from journals acredited by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Highest Education of Indonesia (Kemenristek Dikti) and analyzed by using Swales CARS (2004) model. The results reveal a different macro structure of research articles, variants of moves placement in the introduction, and the tendency of skipping M2 in the articles. Moreover, the research articles also employ paragraphs that do not belong to any moves in Swales CARS (2004) model. Key Words : rhetorical pattern, research article, Swales CARS (2004) model Abstrak : Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki pola retorik dari bagian pendahuluan artikel penelitian terkait dengan Islam dalam jurnal yang dipublikasikan di Indonesia. Abstract : The plethora of experience in one culture is stored in concepts which are further manifested in the lexicon, grammar and metaphors of the language. Some concepts are congruent across languages, while some are not. Theoretically, some linguists maintain that translation is impossible on the ground of linguistic relativity hypothesis. However, in practice translation is always done again and again, and this proves that translation of expressions referring to these concepts is doable. Considering the discussion of the elements of conceptual systems presented here, the writer proposes three ways of translating expressions to convey concepts: (a) compensating the element of a concept with another element of the same concept, (b) separating concepts from words or expression, and (c) bringing the concept and expressions into the target language using loan word/expression with or without any notes, or bringing the concept into the target language using descriptions. To help select an appropriate way of translating in a particular case, translators should consider the translation purpose. As the discussion unfolds, examples are presented to illustrate the situation. Abstract : The focus of this paper will be on giving feedback because it is essential to improve students’ translation skills. Since some people sometimes find teacher feedback can make them down and lost their confidence to translate, peer feedback is chosen as a strategy to help the students to enhance their translation skills. With the advancement of ICT, this kind of strategy can be conducted as an outside class activity through online platforms. Hence, this paper aims to give ideas of implementing online peer feedback to improve students’ translation skills as it also offers many benefits for the students. Key Words : online peer feedback, ICT, translation skills Abstrak : Fokus penelitian ini adalah untuk menjelaskan pentingnya pemberian umpan balik untuk meningkatkan kemampuan penerjemahan siswa. Karena beberapa orang kadang-kadang merasa tidak termotivasi dan kehilangan kepercayaan dirinya dalam kemampuan menerjemahkan dari umpan balik yang diberikan oleh instruktur, maka umpan balik rekan dipilih sebagai strategi untuk membantu siswa meningkatkan keterampilan terjemahan mereka. Dengan kemajuan TIK, strategi semacam ini dapat dilakukan sebagai aktivitas luar kelas melalui platform online. Hence, this paper aims to give ideas of implementing online peer feedback to improve students’ translation skills as it also offers many benefits for the students. Karena beberapa orang kadang-kadang merasa tidak termotivasi dan kehilangan kepercayaan dirinya dalam kemampuan menerjemahkan dari umpan balik yang diberikan oleh instruktur, maka umpan balik rekan dipilih sebagai strategi untuk membantu siswa meningkatkan keterampilan terjemahan mereka. Dengan kemajuan TIK, strategi semacam ini dapat dilakukan sebagai aktivitas luar kelas melalui platform online. Abstract : This study aims at exploring the out-of-class activities employed by the successful and unsuccessful students of the English Department. The activities involve out-of-class general activities and out-of-class English learning activities. The general activities are categorized into academic activities, social activities, leisure activities, and part-time jobs, while the English learning activities are Self-In-struction, Naturalistic Language Learning and Self-Directed Naturalistic Language Learning. This study is qualitative in nature. It was done through (1) documents analysis, (2) in-depth interviews done one by one with the participants. Abstract : This article aims to answer the following research question: are jokes and puns translatable? Using a linguistic approach and collecting relevant data (i.e., jokes and puns in Indonesian and English), this article tries to investigate their translatability. A thorough linguistic analysis shows that there are two kinds of verbal humor: logic-twisting humor and ambiguity-manipulating humor. Verbal humor of the first type is in general translatable; for the translation is an act of rendering meaning. Conversely, verbal humor of the second type is typically untranslatable; for the translation is an act of rendering double correspondence: both form and meaning. Abstract : Translating humorous discourse presents a big challenge for the translators, frequently although the intended meaning is transferred; the humorous effect may be lost due to different cultural terminologies. This research aims to unveil the challenge to translate the cultural specific words that contributed to the funny effect in a Diary of a Wimpy Kid series graphic novel. The first volume of the novel was chosen as the data source. The data were analyzed using Vandaele humor translation theory. The culturally loaded expressions words found include the words from the three foreign cultural words categories including material culture (24%), social culture (55%), and gestures and habits (21%). The challenges in preserving humorous effect dealt with the the choice of words/terminologies that could be understood by most readers, the connotative words that are full of intepretations, and the movements that were expressed in onomatopoeic words. It is suggested that the translator should develop the sense of humor and it is also important to consider the readers’ sense of humor. Abstract : This paper aims to find out what actually the industry needs from their translators when performing Audiovisual (AV) translation, and whether the academic environment, in this case the English Department of Universitas Brawijaya Malang, has fulfilled the industrial needs. From the re-sults of academic document observation and questionnaire to owners of an Indonesian localization company, the authors make some recommendations to include the topic of AV translation in the course of translation that is currently available in the aforementioned English Department. The topic is comprised of the basic concepts of AV text and AV translation, practice of dubbing script translation, and practice of subtitling. The modification of the available course is expected to make the course more relevant to the current needs. Abstract: PISA’s findings reported that Indonesian elementary school students (IESS) achieved their average reading comprehension ability which were below the standard set by OECD. This research proposed school literacy movement (SLM) as an apparatus to cultivate IESS reading and writing skill habit. SLM served as the basis for achieving the 2013 Curriculum requirement. This study applied quasi-experimental method with employed sample of 126 IESS of 5th and 4th graders and their teachers serving in four schools. This study showed that there was significant effect of ITL to improve IESS reading comprehension ability of 5th graders. Penelitian ini mengusung GLS sebagai sarana untuk menumbuhkembangkan pembiasaan baca-tulis siswa sekolah dasar sebagai dasar untuk mencapai tagihan Kurikulum 2013. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimen kuasi dengan sampel 126 siswa kelas 5 dan 4 guru di 4 sekolah dasar.Penelitian menunjukan adanya pengaruh yang signifikan pembelajaran tematik terpadu untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca pemahaman siswa kelas 5 sekolah dasar. This research proposed school literacy movement (SLM) as an apparatus to cultivate IESS reading and writing skill habit. SLM served as the basis for achieving the 2013 Curriculum requirement. This study applied quasi-experimental method with employed sample of 126 IESS of 5th and 4th graders and their teachers serving in four schools. This study showed that there was significant effect of ITL to improve IESS reading comprehension ability of 5th graders.
