Talking irony as one of the figures of speech has been commonly discussed not only in daily conversation but also in social media, contemporary fiction, and different works of literature. However, the study of irony itself is not widely discussed in the novel. This study aims to find the verbal irony that occurs in the novel and in what situations it occurs. The data were taken from the novel “Twilight” written by Stephenie Meyer. The theory is adapted from Winokur (2007) about the definition of verbal irony. This study uses a qualitative approach and data are collected by note-taking and classified into the types of irony. The findings of this study, there are 14 data of verbal irony occur in this study. This study also found that the ironic criticism in the novel appears to minimize the negative meaning of the message. So, it may reduce the level of criticism for the addressee to save face. Explaining Verbal Irony in the Novel is really different from what we communicate in real situations. We have to read the whole text to find the implicit meaning of the irony. For the next study, we can analyze the comparison between irony and humor in literary work, such as novels to have more sight into those signals.

Humor is often used as a way to express emotions about specific topics. It is commonly delivered in the form of jokes and is frequently used in shows that portray the daily life of the characters, especially the ones that use verbal humor. This article aims to fill the gap in the study of the subject of the Cooperative Principle in Pragmatics, which is a complement to the issue analyzed. This study uses qualitative research to approach the data collected from a sitcom series, Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The study used the theory of the Cooperative Principle proposed by Paul Grice. The result of this study shows: (1) the TV series delivers humor by violating four of the Maxims, and (2) the violation of Maxims is required to help the contribution of the conversation in the TV series leads to be related to the audience.

In conducting communication, deixis becomes a significant concern for people in improving their understanding of utterance usage. By learning deixis well, listeners can avoid misinterpretation in understanding the context of utterances, one of them while listening to the songs. Based on this phenomenon, this article aimed at identifying the types of deixis and analyzing the reference meaning of deixis used in Conan Gray’s “Wish You Were Sober” and “Checkmate” song lyrics. This article dealt with the qualitative method, while the documentation method was applied in collecting the data. The collected data were analyzed based on the deixis theory proposed by Cruse and the context of the situation developed by Holmes. The results showed the use of all types of deixis, namely the person, spatial, temporal, social, and discourse deixis. These types of deixis had reference meanings in pointing to participants involved in the songs, the location of participants, the time reference, the social relationship among the participants, and the prior or future discourse elements found in Conan Gray’s song lyrics.

The phenomena of murder, deprivation of the right to life, racism, and legal injustice often occur in the practical political Indonesian society. This illustrates the nation's moral and ethical decadence. What is the goal of living together, namely peace and prosperity, is absent from the reality of Indonesian Human civilization. Based on the above phenomena, the focus of this research is the lonto leok culture as a philosophy of peace from Eric Weil's perspective in building a humanist Indonesian civilization. The method used is text analysis as well as a phenomenological approach. This means exploring the humanitarian events of the Indonesian nation through the lens of lonto leok culture and Eric Weil's philosophy of peace. The lonto leok culture as local wisdom of the Manggarai people carries a spirit of solidarity based on awareness of the dignity of others as subjects. Each subject in Lonto Leok is a person who puts forward rational discourse aimed at a sense of peace and prosperity. The same thing was also discussed by Eric Weil, namely the philosophy of peace. For him, living peacefully originates from the capacity for rational-relationship. This research thus aims at a dialogue between lonto leok culture and Eric Weil's philosophy of peace in building a more humanistic Indonesian civilization.

Inscriptions are a cultural heritage found in Java, Bali and Sumatra. They were written using stone, metal, clay and palm leaves. Judging from the language and letters used, there are inscriptions written in Old Balinese letters and languages, Old Javanese letters and languages, Old Malay letters and languages and a mixture of Pre-Negari and Sanskrit letters. This research aims to explain the political history during the reign of King Sri Maharaja Haji Jayapangus in Bali during the XII century. The data sources in this research are ancient Balinese inscriptions issued by King Jayapangus during his reign, in the XII century. The data were collected using interview and literature study methods and analysed using a descriptive analitical method. The results show that the inscriptions generally contain aspects of Balinese society and important past events. The reason for selecting the inscriptions issued during the reign of King Jayapangus is because the king is known to be very active in documenting various events in the form of inscriptions. According to records, no less than 44 inscriptions were issued by the king. One of the aspects mentioned in his inscriptions is the socio-political life. This aspect is important for further study, because it concerns the continuity of the government system that took place at that period.

In everyday life, humans interact and communicate using language. The use of language varies depending on gender, which is influenced by the different roles each gender plays in society. The different use of language then referred to language features that it uses are also reflected in movies. This study aims to analyze the women’s and men’s language features used by the main character in Disney Movies. The data were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method with a theory proposed by Lakoff (1975) and Coates (2004). It was found out that the main character of the Turning Red Movie (2022) used eight forms out of ten women language features proposed by Lakoff; meanwhile, the main character in the Ron’s Gone Wrong Movie (2021) used all of the men’s language features proposed by Coates. This result shows that women and men have their characteristics in using language as a form of influence from their social environment.
