The aim. To do a research through Vasyl Stefanyk’s epistles into his views on important social-historical and national-political phenomena and processes developing in Halychyna, namely in Lviv, at the beginning of the XXth century. It deals, first and foremost, with the need of starting a Ukrainian university in Halychyna as well as the participation of the metropolitan bishop of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church Andrii Sheptytskyi in this important campaign. The research methods. With the aim of elucidating the declared social-political problem the following methods are employed: cultural-historical and biographical. The results. The article analyses the contexts of Vasyl Stefanyk’s letter, written in December 1901, to Father Kyrylo Hamorak. It is underlined that it is this letter that is an extremely interesting testimony of that epoch, that demonstrates the interest of both Stefanyk and his future father-in-law in political events concerning the struggle of the intelligentsia from Halychyna in order to create a Ukrainian university in Halychyna. The letter persuasively demonstrates the Ukrainian community’s special attention to the figure of Andrii Sheptytskyi, the metropolitan bishop of Halychyna. It is revealedthat the fight to create a Ukrainian university lasted throughout several decades but was not settled neither in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy nor in the Second Partition of Rzeczpospolita. The matter of the Ukrainian university was that first political event, in which, as wrote Vasyl Stefanyk in his letter, Bishop Sheptytskyi demonstrated that he “adheres to Rusyny in a loyal way”. The scientific novelty: for the first time the attention is accentuated on Vasyl Stefanyk’s separate epistle, giving an insight into the multifaceted activities(foremost, social-political ones) of the writer and activist from Pokuttia, into his understanding of the need of establishing a Ukrainian university in Lviv and the participation of the metropolitan bishop Andrii Sheptytskyi in that.

The article examines particles of the Ukrainian language in Vasyl Stefanyk’s novellas. Particles, considering a wide range of communicative functions, intonational setting, positional mobility etc., are one of defining classes of discursive words, which, along withother lingual means, form and define the structure of any fictional canvas. During the research both general scientific methods (analysis, synthesis, generalization), as well as linguistic ones (contextual, transformational) were utilised. The aim of the proposed study is establishing semantic-pragmatic senses of frequent particles in the analysed text that serve as devices of actualizing various spiritual, mental, social characteristics of novellas’ heroes. In the specified perspective the results of the scientific research are: the discovery of the most frequent particles, characteristic of the writer’s idio-style, namely: a, ta, to, zhe (zh), koby, nai, the definition of usual senses of particles, directed at communication (internal dialogism and communicative memory (the particle a), natural communication, combined with the increase of certain components of an utterance (the particle ta)), the guidelines on conscious definiteness and detachment from the depicted and so on. The practical significance of the researchlies in the analysis of particles in Vasyl Stefanyk’s fictional text as discursive words acting as means of the text cohesion and coherence, performing anaphoric and cataphoric functions etc., acting, meanwhile, as one of important lingual components of the author’s individual style. The novelty of scientific theses lies in the fact that for the first time the fictional text of V. Stefanyk’s novellas is examined through the prism of a communicative approach with the aim to establish semantic-pragmatic senses of particles as important elements of the discourse structure.

The article is devoted to the topic of poetics in Vasyl Stefanyk's short stories. The purpose of the article is to analyze the poetics of narrative structures of Vasyl Stefanyk's works on the example of motive-thematic complex of death, to consider also features of descriptive structures of the writer, in particular combination and interaction of descriptive and narrative manners. This goal was possible to be achieved by using the research methods, namely: analysis and synthesis, comparison, specification, and generalization. The authors explore the issues of poetics of narrative structures on the basis of the texts of short stories "Maple Leaves", "Funeral", "Lan", "May" and others. Comparisons of descriptive and narrative elements in Vasyl Stefanyk's short stories are made mainly on the basis of a thorough study of the problems of Gerard Genet's poetics "Figures". The authors focused on the analysis of narrative structures, the peculiarities of the combination and interaction of descriptive and narrative manners of the writer, the functions of the strategy of visualization and descriptiveness in the narrative texts of Vasyl Stefanyk. This is the practical value and novelty of the presented study. The authors found that the principle of visualization allows adding a moment of descriptiveness to the narrative text. Considering the distinction and interaction of visualization and descriptiveness in the texts of Vasyl Stefanyk, the authors trace the moments of transition (or intersection/overlap) of passages in a descriptive and narrative manner of narrative. In addition, the authors of the article analyzed the relationship of time and space dimensions in texts to narrative and descriptive structures. Analysis of Vasyl Stefanyk's short stories through the prism of the interaction of ekphrasis and diegesis opens up completely new perspectives on the interpretation of the text. The high frequency of descriptive structures in Vasyl Stefanyk's texts may be one of the signs of genre heterogeneity in the writer's works.

The aim. The article suggests a new view on the organization and structure of Vasyl Stefanyk’s novella “A Stone Cross” that determines the elucidation of an intermedial issue in the analysis of the writer’s famous work: the unity of a word and sound palette in the fictional text of the novella author’s prose. Therefore, the aim of the article is to study through the prism of one novella a general tendency of Vasyl Stefanyk’s creative work: the synthesis of literature and art, the study of methodological approaches to interpreting the phenomena of intermediacy in the novellas of the classic of our national literature. The research methods. For the analysis the synthesis of principles and methods of scientific researchis implemented, first of all, of intertextual, comparative-typological, intermedial, poetological and biographical ones. The research results. The interpretation of Vasyl Stefanyk’s novella “A Stone Cross” through the prism of verbal and music-sound aspects promotes understanding of the writer’s rich in senses well-known work. That is why the selected poetic analysis of each part of “A Stone Cross” is the most acceptable for researching the textual longevity of sounds and music in the novella’s general structure. In the research process of the sound paradigm of Vasyl Stefanyk’s work, its groundbreaking essence, the peculiarity of its style, modern poetics are proved that undoubtedly affected the precision and powerful energy of its word form. The scientific novelty. In the research there is achieved a new reading of the text of Vasyl Stefanyk’s novella “A Stone Cross”, for the first time there is performed the analysis of its sound contour by means of which the subtexts and hidden senses of the work are decoded. Such a cutting-edge approach proposes a fresh view on the Ukrainian author’s modernistic searches: the sound, music, song, dance identify the main hero Ivan Didukh, generally psychologise the text of the work. The practical significance. The obtained research results may be used in further research of Vasyl Stefanyk’s creative work from positions of contemporary literary studies, particularly the proposed interpretational approach is one of the segments of a poly-aspectual interpretation of the deep in its contents work that has already become classical both in the sphere education and in scientific studies of today’s researchers of Vasyl Stefanyk’s creative work.

Aim. The paper deals with the mutual transition of visual experience into verbal one in acts of creativity evidenced from the poetics of bodily iconotropism by Vasyl Stefanyk. The author focuses on identifying and interpreting the writer’s texts as the ‘body’ of the author, relying on Stefanyk’s self-reflexions and self-commentaries about his creative modes. The purpose of the paper is to establish the functionality and expressiveness of ‘corporeality’ as a semiotic and metaphysical phenomenon. Methods. The study follows a system of genetic, hermeneutic, and semiotic methods. The author draws on the scientific methodology of semiotics and hermeneutics, applies the cognitive theory of literature (cognitive poetics) tenets and research methodology of the psychology of artistic creativity. This is due to the distinctive nature of the study, its subject of inquiry and scope of research. Results. The paper reviews the history of the corporeality poetics in fiction, noting its versatility and meaning-making focus, cultural and cognitive effects. Based on the studies of Stefanyk’s texts and epistolary, the main iconotropic qualities of ‘corporeality’ and their contribution to the formation of dominant images and meaning-oriented codes have been noted. Originality. The paper is the first attempt for summarizing observations on the phenomena of corporeal iconotropism in the works of Vasyl Stefanyk and ascertaining their multilevel functionality for artistic modelling. Practical significance. The paper provides a platform for further inquiry into the phenomena of corporeal iconotropism, the poetics of corporeality in fiction in general, and the work of Vasyl Stefanyk in particular. The findings can underpin coursework and graduation theses.

Mykola Lehkyi
The article examines Vasyl Stefanyk’s novellas, stories, images, sketches, psychograms from his early collections «The Blue Booklet» (1899), «A Stone Cross» (1900), «The Road» (1901) and «My Word» (1905). It is observed that the peculiarity of the literary process at the turn of the ХІХth – ХХth centuries is close corresponding between the creative work of the representatives of several literary generations:the older one (I. Nechui-Levytskyi, Panas Myrnyi, A. Svydnytskyi, I. Karpenko-Karyi, I. Franko) and the younger one (M. Kotsiubynskyi, V. Stefanyk, O. Kobylianska, L. Martovych, Marko Cheremshyna, H. Khotkevych, B. Lepkyi and others). As a matter of fact, the opposition between the traditional and the groundbreaking often revealed itself through creative resistance between literary generations, created by the writers of approximately the same age (though not obligatorily), though close in their worldview and world feeling, fictional-aesthetic ideals, artistic tastes, not that often in aesthetic concepts and programmes, moreover, even in a psychic and spiritual organisation. It is elucidated that the short prose of the writers of the younger generation, i.e. those, who entered the literature in 1890s, witnesses an active renewal of literature, the authors’ searches of new ways and modes of modelling a fictional world. The article observes that the creative work of the writers of the younger generation geenerates a specific force field of Ukrainian modernism with all its branches and currents (impressionism, expressionism, neo-romanticism, surrealism, symbolism, etc.). It seems that with many of its features modernism returns (at a different level of development) towards «old» romanticism, particularly through making a personality independent from social conditions of their existence, making an individual abstract from the general public, making this personality unusual and extraordinary, retreating from imitation and copying, employing the unreal and the mystical, etc. In the work «From the last decades of the ХІХth century» Ivan Franko named Vasyl Stefanyk «the absolute mister of the form», «the true artist by God’s grace», who «does not take care of the reader’s attention», «does not use any rhetorical things in order to attract, to chain to himself». Laconism coupled with capacity and depth of the fictional detail, the tendency to the fragmentation of the plot, mood attunement, penetration into characters’ psychology, foremost, into the emotive sphere of their psyche ‒ those are the distinguishing features of the writer’s early works. It is noticed that Stefanyk frequently drew his heroes in borderline, even extreme situations, where they found themselves under certain circumstances. By the way, the extremum of their psycho-world is marked with the maximal tension, and not always can they cope with the frantic pulse of life. Stefanyk’s works are informatively rich, moreover, the intensity of information is hidden behind the polysemanticity
本文考察了Vasyl Stefanyk的中篇小说,故事,图像,素描,心理图,从他的早期作品集《蓝色小册子》(1899),《石头十字架》(1900),《路》(1901)和《我的词》(1905)。可以观察到,在ХІХth - ХХth世纪之交,文学过程的特殊性与几代文学代表的创造性工作密切相关:老一辈(I. Nechui-Levytskyi, Panas Myrnyi, A. Svydnytskyi, I. Karpenko-Karyi, I. Franko)和年轻一代(M. Kotsiubynskyi, V. Stefanyk, O. Kobylianska, L. Martovych, Marko Cheremshyna, H. Khotkevych, B. Lepkyi等)。

It is observed that the peculiarity of the literary process at the turn of the ХІХth – ХХth centuries is close corresponding between the creative work of the representatives of several literary generations:the older one (I. Nechui-Levytskyi, Panas Myrnyi, A. Svydnytskyi, I. Karpenko-Karyi, I. Franko) and the younger one (M. Kotsiubynskyi, V. Stefanyk, O. Kobylianska, L. Martovych, Marko Cheremshyna, H. Khotkevych, B. Lepkyi and others). As a matter of fact, the opposition between the traditional and the groundbreaking often revealed itself through creative resistance between literary generations, created by the writers of approximately the same age (though not obligatorily), though close in their worldview and world feeling, fictional-aesthetic ideals, artistic tastes, not that often in aesthetic concepts and programmes, moreover, even in a psychic and spiritual organisation. It is elucidated that the short prose of the writers of the younger generation, i.e. those, who entered the literature in 1890s, witnesses an active renewal of literature, the authors’ searches of new ways and modes of modelling a fictional world. \u0000The article observes that the creative work of the writers of the younger generation geenerates a specific force field of Ukrainian modernism with all its branches and currents (impressionism, expressionism, neo-romanticism, surrealism, symbolism, etc.). It seems that with many of its features modernism returns (at a different level of development) towards «old» romanticism, particularly through making a personality independent from social conditions of their existence, making an individual abstract from the general public, making this personality unusual and extraordinary, retreating from imitation and copying, employing the unreal and the mystical, etc. \u0000In the work «From the last decades of the ХІХth century» Ivan Franko named Vasyl Stefanyk «the absolute mister of the form», «the true artist by God’s grace», who «does not take care of the reader’s attention», «does not use any rhetorical things in order to attract, to chain to himself». Laconism coupled with capacity and depth of the fictional detail, the tendency to the fragmentation of the plot, mood attunement, penetration into characters’ psychology, foremost, into the emotive sphere of their psyche ‒ those are the distinguishing features of the writer’s early works. It is noticed that Stefanyk frequently drew his heroes in borderline, even extreme situations, where they found themselves under certain circumstances. By the way, the extremum of their psycho-world is marked with the maximal tension, and not always can they cope with the frantic pulse of life. Stefanyk’s works are informatively rich, moreover, the intensity of information is hidden behind the polysemanticity","PeriodicalId":338851,"journal":{"name":"PRECARPATHIAN BULLETIN OF THE SHEVCHENKO SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY Word","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114252078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim. This paper examines the translation of Vasyl Stefanyk’s short story «The Baby Watcher» (1921) into German. The purpose of the paper is to analyse the target text sentences’ syntactic structure in the remit of considering the equivalent and adequate rendering of the meaning of the original. Methods. In the furtherance of this purpose, we resorted to descriptive method (we identified the units of analysis in each individual sentence or its part under consideration), contrastive method (we compared the communicative and pragmatic correspondence of the translation to semantically equivalent units of the original) and the method of intent analysis (we determined the communicative intention of the speaker in free direct and indirect discourses). Results. Proceeding from the analysis of the lexical and stylistic features of the translation done by Alla Paslavska and Tobias Vogel, we argue that it renders the content of the original with appropriate / similar means, except when stylistically neutral target language lexemes are equivalent to the dialectally marked vocabulary of the source language. Originality. The paper is the first attempt for a syntactic analysis of the short story «The Baby Watcher», focusing on the pragmatic correspondence of the texts being compared. Practical significance. The findings of the study will serve to those involved in the synchronic-comparative study of language systems, the study of the Ukrainian writer’s signature world-view for the purposes of producing fiction translation, as well as at the decision of linguistic pragmatics applied tasks.

The article analyzes the common names and surnames of women, which are reflected in the short stories of Vasyl Stefanyk. Attention is paid to the specifics of the writer's artistic work as a representative of the dialect of Pokuttia, the semantic, word-forming, stylistic features of the nouns embodied in his works with the meaning of femininity are revealed. It is noted that the feminicon of his short stories is a close combination of all-literary, Western Ukrainian and Pokuttia lexical units, which is marked by the specifics of the author's artistic vision and immersion in the world of rural life. It is noted that the feminicon of his short stories is a close combination of all-literary, Western Ukrainian and Pokuttia lexical units, which is marked by the specifics of the author's artistic vision and immersion in the world of rural life. The processes of feminization and femininity in Vasyl Stefanyk's work are based on the vernacular, which made it possible to attract all the feminine richness of the then Ukrainian literary language for women's education and its realization along with masculinities. From the lexical-semantic point of view, it is the embodiment of commonly used and special nominations, the expansion of the semantic structure of femininities, and their use with specific meanings. In structural and word-forming terms, it is the realization of derived and non-derived words, the predominance of suffixal word-forming types over other derivatives, the expansion of the functionality of word-forming means. At the stylistic level, it is the accumulation of stylistically neutral and colored vocabulary, giving almost all nouns with the meaning of femininity a colloquial character and different connotative shades in the meaning. Consideration and interpretation of female images was based on deep legislation and the involvement of writers in the realities of Pokuttia life, which led to the integrated use of appropriate names of women.
