Abstract The present study was aimed to investigate the pre-natal and post-natal risk factors for mental retardation among children in Varanasi. The sample of the study was categorized into three categories viz. mild, moderate and severe. The sample size consisted of 150 mentally retarded children: 34 mild, 96 moderate and 20 severe in the age group of 5-20 years. Purposive sampling technique was done with the help of interview schedule. Results of the study indicated that the maternal age at conception, excessive use of nicotine and alcohol during the pre-natal period, child prematurity and nutritional disorder in the natal and post-natal period were the prime causes behind mental retardation.

Abstract Empowering women is the best incentive for development of society. Half of the population of India is composed of women and their empowerment would decide the empowerment of the society. Empowerment means development of women in terms of economical, social, physical, mental, educational and political growth. This paper tries to find out whether economic activity of the women empowers them. We have interviewed 60 women entrepreneurs during the Kisan Mela (Farmer’s Fair) at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana in 2011. Kisan Mela (Farmer’s Fair) is an agricultural exhibition which is organized by agricultural universities every year in Kharif and Rabi season of agriculture. Women are in a vulnerable position and face a host of challenges when starting or seeking to grow their business, some of the challenges are rooted in socio-cultural norms and patriarchal practices which put women in an inferior position to men. In addition, women are seen to work twice as hard as men to prove that they are capable of doing a good job. Entrepreneurship is considered to be a significant determinant of economic development.

Abstract Women in India remain a disadvantaged section of society even in the context of continual advancement taking place. Opportunities must be created specifically for the rural women by empowering them and enabling them to acquire the skills necessary for entering into various occupations. Present paper studies awareness of rural girls about Home Science education. An exhaustive list of income generating avenues (of Home Science education) was prepared and used as a tool to educate masses; and lectures were arranged. Results indicate that none of the target group had any knowledge of career options of home science education in industry, freelancing, self-help groups, profit generating networks and agencies like NGO’s and KVK’s. Few girls had knowledge of consultancy services, home based industry and self-employment. Most of the young rural girls wanted to learn trade to go and work abroad for economic gains. So there is urgent need to start such awareness campaigns at root level, especially at the entry level to higher education.

Abstract The present study was undertaken to find out the impact of multisensory stimulation on motor and mental development of infants. A sample size of 100 full term, single tone infants with normal birth weight belonging to the age group birth to 18 months were selected. They were grouped into experimental and control groups and multisensory stimulation was given to the experimental group. The motor and mental development of infants were tested twice (pre test and post test) with Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID). Stimulation was given to the infants for duration of 6 months, twice in a week for 20-25 minutes each day. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences between the experimental and control groups in mental and motor development of infants. It was found that there was a positive impact of multisensory stimulation on motor and mental development of infants. Significant age differences have been seen in Psychomotor Development Index (PDI) and Mental Development Index (MDI) of infants.

Abstract A study was carried out with the objective to assess the existing knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) in the management of hypertension among elderly people. Based on the pre-existed knowledge a module of educational programme was developed by the investigators to improve their KAP in the management of hypertension and health. Purposive random technique was used for the study. The experimental group consisted of 80 elderly with hypertension out of which 40 each of men and women in the age group of 65 to 76 years selected from three areas of Bangalore city. An assessment of KAP among hypertensive elderly was made through a Structured Interview Schedule (SIS) developed by the investigator. A quasi-experimental approach with a repeated measure design was used with provision to compare the pre and post test assessment. The results revealed that the post test scores on KAP were higher than the pre test scores and individual differences also reduced considerably during post test for both men and women and the two age groups of respondents. Among the elderly, knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) surveys are important and effective in terms of providing necessary information through intervention programmes for the prevention and management of hypertension and to improve their quality of life.

Abstract India is a country known for its culture and traditions all over the world. Handicrafts sector plays a significant and important role in the country’s economy. Among several embroidery works aari is traditional hand embroidery carried out on a wooden cot like frame with aar needle. embellishment workers for long hours sitting on without any seating aids, and are prone to developing musculoskeletal symptoms. A survey was carried out to identify the need to develop the ergonomic analysis module. The literature search on ergonomic evaluation tools, revealed the availability of about 12 qualitative, 9 quantitative tools and 10 ergonomic analysis modules mostly in the form of software packages. Among them, Ergomaster module was selected as a frame of reference as it covered all the aspects of analyzing any work environment. A total of seven tools including four ergonomic checkpoints formats, five rating scales on degree of difficulty were developed using the Likert scale method of summated ratings. The constructed analysis module was analyzed by thirty experts of various research and technical experts for its content validation in terms of four qualities and was found consistent. The tool was also tested for reliability with p value above 0. 9 confirming the tool for its dependability in eliciting the needed data from the subjects.

Abstract Banana is grown in all kinds of soils having good drainage. This fruit has great socio-economic significance and is interwoven in the cultural heritage of the country. Of all the varieties, ‘Nendran’ is the most prized cooking variety used in Kerala In the context of low productivity of ‘nendran’, there is need for value addition to this crop. Jaggery based ‘payasam’ is an inevitable item for any festive occasion to a Malayali or for that matter, any South Indian. Owing to its cumbersome preparation, many housewives put off the preparation and prefer to make milk based “payasam” which is easier to prepare. Standardisation and shelf life assessment of the product has been conducted in this study. Five samples of “payasam mix” were developed and reconstituted using standard procedures. Sample S1 scored highest with respect to sensory parameters. Its nutrient composition was ascertained and shelf life was also observed to be of high quality till 15th day without addition of preservatives.

Abstract The present investigation was done to study the impact of education on reproductive health among women residing in slums of Varanasi district. Multistage stratified random sampling technique was used to select the sample (n= 500). A self-structured and pre-tested interview schedule was used to collect the responses of mothers related to their reproductive health. Selected women were interviewed by personal visit. The result shows highly significant correlations (P<0.001) between educational qualification of mothers and number of living children. Educated mothers have better reproductive health in comparison with illiterate mothers. Hence priority should be given by government for education of girls and women as educational opportunities affect their status as they havemore control over their own lives, health and fertility.

Abstract The present study has been designed to find out adolescents’ perception of their relationship with both the parents and its impact on the emotional autonomy. A sample of 200 adolescents comprising of 100 boys and 100 girls in the age group of 16-18 years was drawn from four Government schools of Ludhiana city. Parent Child Relationship Scale by Nalini Rao and Emotional Autonomy Scale by Steinberg and Silverberg were used to assess parent adolescent relationship and emotional autonomy of the respondents respectively. Results revealed that highly autonomous boys considered their father to be more rejecting and neglecting and less loving than their mother. Highly autonomous girls perceived their father to be demanding and their mother to be less rewarding symbolically and objectively and less loving. Aspects of positive parenting such as protecting, symbolic reward, loving and object reward was associated with decreased emotional autonomy among adolescents.

Abstract The study was undertaken to determine the drudgery of women with the objective of assessing biomechanical and physiological stress while performing wheat harvesting. The field experiment was carried out on 20 women falling in two age groups, viz. 25-35 and 35-45 years. Average heart rate of the women of both age groups increased as the activity proceeded towards the evening. Average heart rate of women of lower age group was 115.9 bpm in the morning and 120.8 bpm in the evening. For the older age group, corresponding figures were 127.2 bpm and 132.7 bpm respectively. The classification of workload on the basis of average and peak heart rate, wheat harvesting activity was graded as moderately heavy to heavy period after activity Almost all the women reported severe to moderate discomfort in lower back (mean score 4.7), knees (3.8), buttocks (2.3) upper back (1.8), ankle knees (3.8), feet (1.7) and neck (1.5).
