Purpose – Verify whether Ibovespa, Old or New, could be the best alternative for investors, considering investment possibilities (risky and risk free) in the Brazilian market. Should investors put the portion of money that they allocate to risky assets into New Ibovespa? Are there more effi cient alternatives for investors? Design/methodology/approach – Th e Portfolio T was determined with the modern portfolio theory from a sample of 118 shares for 34 four-month periods. Equality of means and variance were tested by means of parametric and nonparametric tests, as appropriate.

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the relationship between greater participation of people with disabilities in Brazilian firms and productivity as a performance indicator. Design/methodology/approach – To test the relationship between the proportion of PwD and the productivity of Brazilian firms, we used regression analysis with panel data and a dataset of public information from 46 firms for years 2010 and 2011. Findings – There was no statistical evidence stating that a greater proportion of people with disabilities in the workforce has a negative (or positive) relationship with the productivity of Brazilian firms. Conversely, a positive relationship between a greater proportion of people with disabilities and productivity was found amongst firms that present greater social commitment. Originality/value – These results indicate the contingent character associated with diversity management, and that the adoption of social practices by Brazilian firms can be an important mechanism for the management of diversity and inclusion.

Purpose – Th e present paper adds to the most recent current of literature that highlights the importance of innovation in services, analyzing a setting – Portugal – which is relatively backward in terms of innovation performance. Design/methodology/approach – Based on a sample of 4128 companies (including 1489 service companies) that answered the Community Innovation Survey 2008, we assessed, by resorting to logistic regressions, the determinants of innovation performance in Portuguese companies. Findings – 1) Workers who have the 1st cycle of higher education have a positive and signifi cant impact on the innovation of service companies whereas PhDs are detrimental to companies’ innovative performance; 2) Companies in the service sector in general, and in KIBS in particular, that eff ectively invest in external and (continuous) internal RD 3) External scientifi c sources of information for innovation are crucial (and much more than in manufacturing) to the innovation performance of service companies, especially of KIBS; 4) Similarly to manufacturing, participation in innovation activities in cooperation with foreign partners appears as a key factor in the innovative performance of service companies. Originality/value – The study demonstrates the influence of companies’ openness and the relative importance attributed to diff erent sources of information for innovation on innovation outcomes of service companies (and KIBS) compared to manufacturing industries.

Purpose – This paper aims to analyze the insertion of the environmental dimension in the operations strategy of three automotive manufacturers belonging São Paulo’s ABC region, and how it can impact the operations field’s competitive performance. Design/methodology/approach – Descriptive, exploratory multiple case study. Findings – There is an alignment between companies with regard to the performance indicators of the environmental dimension and to competitive priorities. We observed concern as to the social aspect of sustainability. Companies are designing socially fair production systems, in which work safety and occupational health are seen as strategic factors that contribute to competitive performance in the field of operations. Originality/value – One theoretical contribution is the proposal of a conceptual model that aims to fill a gap in literature concerning the lack of alignment between the operations strategy and environmental management, which can, in turn, hinder or even underestimate the understanding of the role of the operations field in the quest for competitive advantage.

Purpose – To analyze recognition of impairment losses in tangible and intangible assets, and their relevance to investors in companies listed in the Lisbon and Madrid Stock Exchange (2007-2011). Methodology – Quantitative analysis of a panel data sample of 80 companies listed in the Lisbon and Madrid Stock Exchange (20072011) was carried out. Panel data linear and non-linear regression models were estimated. Findings – We found that the amount of impairment losses showed an upward trend, and that these losses are most significant among intangibles, especially goodwill (GW). We also found that the probability of recognition of impairment losses is positively influenced by the dimension of entities and negatively by market value (p < 0.10). Portuguese export-oriented companies have a higher probability of not recognizing impairments. However, Portuguese companies with higher market values have greater probability of recognizing impairment losses, contrary to the sample as a whole, in which the relationship is negative (p < 0.10). The results also suggest that there is a smoothing effect on results because of impairments, especially in IBEX35 companies. As to the relevance of impairment losses to market value, we confirm a significant negative relationship, in line with conclusions from previous studies. Originality/value – This study contributes to the introduction of the cultural factor in this analysis, highlighting the differentiated behaviors between Portuguese and Spanish companies.

Objetivo – This research sought to develop a cognitive model that expresses how marketing professionals understand the relationship between the constructs that define relationship marketing (RM). It also tried to understand, using the obtained model, how objectives in this field are achieved. Metodo – Through cognitive mapping, we traced 35 individual mental maps, highlighting how each respondent understands the interactions between RM elements. Based on the views of these individuals, we established an aggregate mental map. Fundamentacao teorica - The topic is based on a literature review that explores the RM concept and its main elements. Based on this review, we listed eleven main constructs. Resultados – We established an aggregate mental map that represents the RM structural model. Model analysis identified that CLV is understood as the final result of RM. We also observed that the impact of most of the RM elements on CLV is brokered by loyalty. Personalization and quality, on the other hand, proved to be process input elements, and are the ones that most strongly impact others. Finally, we highlight that elements that punish customers are much less effective than elements that benefit them. Contribuicoes – The model was able to insert core elements of RM, but absent from most formal models: CLV and customization. The analysis allowed us to understand the interactions between the RM elements and how the end result of RM (CLV) is formed. This understanding improves knowledge on the subject and helps guide, assess and correct actions.

Objective – The purpose of this paper is to build a framework for an international outsourcing process in the apparel industry that can serve to support managerial decisions and actions regarding outsourcing choices and implementation. Design/methodology/approach – We developed of a straightforward and flexible framework describing the main stages of the international outsourcing process and its main activities with application in the context of the apparel industry. A case study approach was adopted with primary data collected through in-depth interviews and secondary data aggregated from company reports and documents. Theoretical foundation – Some research gaps in the outsourcing literature and most specifically on the matter of international outsourcing were identified by Hatonen and Eriksson (2009) and Kakabadse and Kakabadse (2000), among others. Specifically, these authors claim that there is not enough research on developing and offering decision models, tools or guidelines to support managerial decisions with the appropriate empirical evidence. This study aims to address this gap. Findings – We found that the international outsourcing process can be described using the proposed framework. Apparel companies can use this framework to support and supervise international outsourcing processes. Practical implications – This study provides a simple model that can help companies in the apparel industry to enhance their outsourcing activities and operations, and also contributes to a broader academic understanding of the matter.

Objective – This paper assessed the formation of innovation networks by firms and institutions of science and technology (IST) so that they can receive financial resources from science and technology sector funds (SFs). SFs are the cornerstones of the Brazilian national system of innovation (NSI). As the funds were created slightly over a decade ago, it is high time they underwent revision. Design/methodology/approach – The research used data from projects offered by FINEP, RAIS and Economatica. Beyond the pursuit of basic patents Derwent Knowledge of Reuters. Descriptive analyzes were performed, network analysis through Gephi software and applied a multiple regression to the available indicators on the impacts generated by FS. The indicators used originate from different areas of knowledge and are analyzed in light of the theory of open innovation. Findings – In the preliminary stage of the program, funds were largely allocated to the science and technology sector, but firms had a low level of participation in the projects. In addition, patent applications are below expectations at that stage, given that one of the aims of SF is the incentive for technological development. Practical implications – Despite the improved transparency in the Brazilian economy, restrictions on information do not permit the application of statistical tests to measure the impacts of investments in innovation Originality/value – The innovation networks were assessed by social network analysis, which indicated that most nodes (actors) are occupied by more active ISTs, lowering any expectations for a higher level of participation by firms. Some suggestions are made for improving incentive programs for innovation and their management.

Objective – This paper presents an analysis of service factors that impact customer satisfaction with dealers in the sugarcane segment in Sao Paulo state – Brazil. Design/methodology/approach – The research method is descriptive quantitative, based on survey. Data is secondary gathered from the tractor-making company’s database, with n = 88. Tools used for multivariate statistical analysis were factor analysis and correspondence analysis. Findings – The results revealed a reduction in latent variables into two components: trust and relationship. The correspondence analysis presents association among variables “cost-benefit of spare parts” and “treated fairly and honestly”. Practical implications – Despite the evidence of a relationship between the results and the information available in the literature, results cannot be generalized, since theory doesn´t fully describes the investigated sector. Future research may advance towards validating if the emerged variables are relevant on the strategic decision making process for this segment.
