The metaverse, an emerging educational frontier, presents boundless opportunities and distinct challenges for educators and students alike. This study delves into these aspects within the context of tourism education, employing a mixed-methods approach. It integrates in-depth interviews with 13 tourism academics and a quantitative survey of 268 tourism students. The qualitative data are meticulously coded, and the quantitative data are analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). This research not only conceptually outlines the future benefits of the metaverse, such as enhanced interactive learning and global classroom experiences but also empirically examines its impact on tourism students' engagement and learning outcomes. Key findings highlight both the empowering potential and the infrastructural and accessibility challenges posed by metaverse technology in tourism education. Ultimately, this study provides a holistic view of metaverse-based education's role in advancing the tourism industry, suggesting practical implications for technological adaptation and pedagogical strategies.

This study presents a novel educational intervention, the Sustainable Marketing with Big Data (SMBD) module, grounded in the theory of change. The SMBD module integrated data literacy, sustainability knowledge, and marketing skills through problem-based learning, creative problem solving, computer-based learning, and project-based pedagogical approaches. Employing a mixed-methods research design, this investigation evaluated the effectiveness of the proposed SMBD curriculum through a quasiexperimental design and compared learning outcomes between an experimental group (n = 44) and a control group (n = 39) taught with traditional methods. Pre- and posttests were used to assess students' data literacy, sustainability attitudes and behaviors, and marketing competency. ANCOVA revealed that the experimental group exhibited significantly greater improvements across all dimensions than did the control group. Regression analysis confirmed the positive influence of gains in big data literacy and sustainability knowledge on marketing skill demonstration. Qualitative analysis of focus group data provided further insights into students' learning experiences and engagement with the SMBD curriculum. The results support the efficacy of the theory of change framework and active learning pedagogies in enhancing undergraduate hospitality students' competencies in three critical domains. The SMBD model offers educators a comprehensive, empirically validated curriculum for preparing future hospitality leaders to leverage big data for sustainable marketing in a rapidly evolving industry.

The position of sociology within the UK post-92 higher education curriculum is increasingly under threat as neoliberal ideology continues to shape universities to be based on market principles. Here, the discipline is often thought to lack clear ‘practical’ outcomes which meet the demands of the job market and these challenges are particularly prominent within the capitalist nature of sport-based degrees. Using data generated from focus groups and interviews, this paper explores sport students' experiences of studying the sociology of sport within a UK post-92 higher education institution. The findings illustrate wide ranging benefits the students perceived to gain from studying the sub-discipline. From these empirical insights, we put forward the argument that the sociology of sport has potential to offer significant value to students on sport-based degrees which meet the demands of the current higher education system, as well as broader values beyond restrictive neo-liberal thinking.

This research aims to elucidate the determinants of cultural heritage tourism demand by using visit frequency as a dependent variable. Combining use of the truncated Poisson model and order logit model, we analyze the demand structure of cultural heritage tourism relative to frequency of visits to the Forbidden City. Although the results based on the two models differed, we show major determinants to be authenticity selection attributes and sociodemographic and tripographic characteristic variables. These variables are expected to be helpful in learning in cultural heritage tourism destination and suggesting better cultural education programs for cultural sustainability in cultural heritage tourism.

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of utilizing trade show related videos on Netflix on the learning motivation and multilingual listening ability of MICE learners. Employing a quasi-experimental design, a total of 60 MICE learners were randomly assigned to either the experimental group or the control group, each of which consisted of 30. The experimental group utilized Netflix streaming videos to complete their training, while the control group relied on traditional methods and textbooks for the same course. Both quantitative and qualitative research findings indicated that MICE learners who incorporated Netflix into their learning process exhibited significant improvement in learning motivation and foreign accent perception. Moreover, the teaching content and experience offered by Netflix could be effectively employed in exhibition training preparation, thus augmenting learning motivation and foreign accent perception.

This article examines the neglected hardships faced by graduate students and advocates for a paradigm shift towards care and empathy. Drawing upon a feminist ethic of care theoretical framework, four scholars from tourism and hospitality programs in the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom engaged in a dialogical and introspective inquiry. The authors present four vignettes reflecting on their own doctoral experiences, revealing experiences of exploitation, pain, unworthiness, and loneliness endured during their graduate studies. The authors conclude by calling for a reevaluation of academic norms, advocating for a more humane, caring, and supportive environment for future scholars.

This study utilised content analysis and semi-structured interviews with librarians to examine reading list diversity guidance within English higher education. Additional interviews with sport management educators evaluated their perceptions towards, and implementation of, diverse reading lists. Underpinned by congruence theory, the results evidenced incongruence between educators and librarians. Highlighting dyadic goal importance incongruence, educators disagreed that diverse reading lists can increase student attainment and engagement. Deep levels of dissimilarity regarding the pedagogical value of diverse reading lists also existed. However, educators perceived non-implementation of reading list diversity to be congruent with the diversity values expressed by their institution and department.

Academic dishonesty is a pervasive problem in Chinese higher education, with both motivational and contextual factors influencing students’ behavior. This study integrates self-determination theory (SDT) and the motivation-opportunity-ability (MOA) model to investigate why students engage in academic dishonesty during thesis writing and their decision-making processes. SDT emphasizes intrinsic motivation and the satisfaction of basic psychological needs, including competence, autonomy, and relatedness. The MOA model posits that behaviors result from the interaction of motivation, ability, and opportunity. Through qualitative interviews with students majoring in tourism and hospitality, this research demonstrates that students with lower levels of self-determination (i.e., lack of autonomy, lack of competence, and lack of relatedness) show a limited willingness to complete thesis tasks in a moral manner. Moderated by ability frustration and opportunity frustration, the motivation to be dishonest leads to actual immoral behavior. This study sheds light on the complex factors driving academic dishonesty and offers insights for addressing this issue in higher education.

Higher education institutions have a fundamental role in the social and economic dynamics of any country, with a decisive influence on their students’ future careers, particularly in stimulating entrepreneurship. Their formative role is crucial, including in structural issues such as gender equality in the business context. This study aims to identify and analyse the lines of action implemented by higher education institutions (HEI) with courses in the area of sport to promote sport entrepreneurship, particularly in the field of female entrepreneurship. A qualitative approach was adopted, applying a semi-structured interview to 21° coordinators in the area of sport, belonging to both state and private HEIs in Portugal. The results indicate that some HEIs have shown concern about applying strategies to stimulate entrepreneurship in sport, but they do so in a random way. The results also suggest the need to be able to re-adapt course curricula in order to promote sport entrepreneurship more through different strategic actions such as: specific curricular units, extra-curricular activities, setting up a department devoted to entrepreneurship, besides the need to create specific initiatives to stimulate female entrepreneurship. Also suggested is optimization of the synergy between HEIs, the work environment and government. Articulation between these stakeholders would contribute to a more entrepreneurial culture, particularly in relation to female entrepreneurship in the sport context.
