ABSTRACT The single task of the Parisian masters of the thirteenth century was to read Scripture, a task they performed by way of the famous legere, disputare, praedicare. Although intimately connected these three are rarely studied in relation to each other. Thomas Aquinas’s sermons on the beatitudes (Matthew 5. 1–10) can be compared to his commentary on Matthew and the Summa Theologiae. This opens up a new perspective on the sermons, addressing some of the questions they raise. The edition of Aquinas’s sermons by Louis Bataillon is instrumental in performing this task and will therefore be considered in greater detail. The present article seeks to contribute to Medieval Sermon Studies by way of a more theological approach and to present to theologians the importance of a greater appreciation for the sermons of the masters.

ABSTRACT Private preaching certainly existed at papal Avignon, though a shortage of private sermon texts makes it difficult to gauge either the frequency with which it occurred or its importance to the cultural life of the fourteenth-century curia. The survival in a single manuscript of two sermons, preached by prominent Dominicans in the private chapel of Cardinal Pierre des Prés in the spring of 1340, may provide some insight in the phenomenon of private preaching at Avignon. Similar – not identical, but very similar – in structure, tone, and topoi to sermons preached before the popes during the solemn liturgies of the Avignonese chapel, the two private texts seem to suggest that private preaching at Avignon grew up in imitation of the liturgical sermons of the papal chapel, but without the ceremonial context.

ABSTRACT The accepted narrative concerning monastic preaching to the English laity suggests that it happened occasionally in the twelfth century and then disappeared until the fourteenth century when monks and canons regular, belatedly following the friars’ example, began to preach again. This paper calls that narrative into question. Records of episcopal administration and surviving sermon books of monastic provenance, including manuscripts from Worcester and Durham cathedrals, provide evidence for pastoral care of the laity and popular preaching by cloistered religious in thirteenth-century England. This would indicate that some monks and canons were contributors and not mere bystanders to the pastoral revolution that shaped later medieval lay religion. In addition to providing evidence, the article points towards previously neglected sources where more is likely to be found.

ABSTRACT The article deals with the sermon collection entitled Sermones de principalibus festis, by Peter of Zittau (d. 1339). The collection has survived in a single manuscript – codex Ms 434 at Leipzig University Library. Drawing on the results of paleographic, codicological and textual analysis of codex Ms 434, the authors explore what the manuscript record of the sermons reveals about the genesis of the texts and Peter of Zittau's working methods. Particular attention is paid to the numerous corrections which were added to the text of the sermons (as copied into the codex by a scribe) by a different contemporary hand. Based on an analysis of the nature of these corrections and a comparison of the handwriting with that of Peter of Zittau (as known from the autograph of the second book of his Chronica Aulae regiae), the paper tests the hypothesis that the author of the corrections in manuscript Ms 434 was Peter of Zittau himself.

The book edited byDaniele Solvi is the second volume of ‘LeVite quattrocentesche di S. Bernardino da Siena’ to be published. The editorial project, coordinated by Daniele Solvi and Alessandra Bartolomei Romagnoli, intends to cover the fifteenth-century hagiographical corpus of vitae of St Bernardino of Siena in four volumes. This will help scholars re-evaluate the complex construction of the hagiographical profile(s) of this canonized preacher. In 2014, the book containing the texts produced between 1450 and 1460, immediately after Bernardino’s canonization (see the review in Medieval Sermon Studies, 59 [2015], 88–90), was published. While the first volume of the series, which will focus on the vitae written during the process of canonization (i.e. 1444–50), is still missing, the present book provides scholars with seven texts (two of them with a double version) that span over one century, from the 1460s to the 1570s, thus covering the period of the sedimentation and crystallization of the official memory of the new saint. The table of contents immediately shows the richness of the volume as well as the considerable differences in terms of authorship, length, and function of each text:

ABSTRACT This article presents and discusses a parchment fragment in the Royal Library in Copenhagen (Fragment Collection, no. 3230), a single folio of a now lost manuscript. It contains a miracle tale about a bishop murderer, a story that can also be found in the famous edifying work Consolation of the Soul. The medieval Danish translation of Consolation of the Soul – Sjælens trøst – is extant in two separate pieces (Ups. C 509 and Holm. A 109) of what was once a single manuscript. The two separate pieces do not, however, make a whole and part of the Sjælens trøst manuscript is missing. However, the Copenhagen fragment is not part of this missing piece. In fact, it belongs to an entirely different text tradition – Étienne de Bourbon’s Tractatus de diversis materiis praedicabilibus – and is a remnant of a translation of (part of) this collection of exempla. As such, it is a significant addition to our knowledge of medieval preaching in Denmark and the use of vernacular translations of continental, Latin didactic material in exempla.

A variety of sources, including scripture, classical and medieval naturalists, and bestiaries, helped to inform the construction of animal symbology and to establish what might be considered a canon regarding animal symbolism. Two preachers at the fourteenth-century Avignonese curia – Cardinal Pierre des Prés and the Dominican Pierre de Palme – made extensive use of animal imagery in their sermons, drawing on the established medieval ‘canon’ of such imagery while simultaneously demonstrating considerable originality, particularly in constructing moral interpretations of the animal images that they employed.
