What English blood seeing the person of any bold English man presented and doth not hugge his fame, and hunnye at his valor, pursuing him in his enterprise with his best wishes, and as being wrapt in contemplation, offers to him in his hart all prosperous performance, as if the Personater were the man Personated, so bewitching a thing is lively and well spirited action, that it hath power to new mold the harts of the spectators and fashion them to the shape of any noble and notable attempt. demonstrated a personal shock as he read out the description of Ophelia’s ‘white bosom’ (2.2.113). Appalled at the intimacy, Barber’s Polonius scanned the remaining pages of indecency with a grimace before beginning to read out loud again at ‘Doubt thou the stars are fire...’. It was an effective intrusion into Ophelia’s private life, which caused her, shrinking with embarrassment, to flee from the stage. Apart from a different Polonius, the rest of the production remained stubbornly (and with faults outlined above) static. I had hoped to be able to report some degree of development and increasing sophistication between the production’s very first and very final performances. No such luck.

in contrast, as highlighting acts of subversion. Indeed, ‘some domestic tragedies depict householder servants as more perceptive, more intelligent, and sometimes more morally admirable than their masters’ (pp. 229–30). The staging of the anxieties and tensions between master and servant in the homes of the middling sort opened up a space for such questions to be examined and, Sheeha argues, the depiction of servants as individuals, not stereotypes, ‘may be the genre’s greatest achievement’ (p. 231).

In October 2021, the Beyond Shakespeare group performed the text of Thomas Middleton's Lord Mayor's Show of 1621, The Sun in Aries, at Bow Church in London's Cheapside. Lasting about half an hour, as opposed to the original all-day event, it featured music, child and adult performers, and minimal visual effects. The experiment showed that actors’ voices can be effective even in outdoor spaces (though less effective than music), but also that much of their language is unintelligible without its context. This, then, is what future experiments should attempt to provide.
