This collection of scholarly articles asks the question "How useful is translation technology?" Pointing to the need for a widely used and reliable way to test the efficiency of language translation programs, the presenters show that commercial tools such as translation memories and translation workbenches are popular, and their developers find them useful in terms of productivity, consistency, or quality. However, these claims are rarely proven using objective comparative studies, and this group describes several new statistical approaches to more rigorous evaluation methods.

Irony is a salient feature of common discourse and of some of contemporary art ’s more sophisticated representations. An intriguing characteristic of art and speech, irony ’s power and relevance reaches well beyond the enclaves of academic research and reflection. Translating irony involves a series of interpretative gestures which are not solely provoked by or confined to the act of translation as such. Even when one does not move between languages, reading irony always involves an act of interpretation which ‘translates’ a meaning out of a text that is not ‘given’. This article offers a critical survey of the literature on the translation of irony while aiming to monitor and explain the techniques and challenges involved in its translation.

We describe the results of a research project aimed at automatic detection of MT errors using state-of-the-art MT evaluation metrics, such as BLEU. Currently, these automated metrics give only a general indication of translation quality at the corpus level and cannot be used directly for identifying gaps in the coverage of MT systems. Our methodology uses automatic detection of frequent multiword expressions (MWEs) in sentence-aligned parallel corpora and computes an automated evaluation score for concordances generated for such MWEs which indicates whether a particular expression is systematically mistranslated in the corpus. The method can be applied both to source and target MWEs to indicate, respectively, whether MT can successfully deal with source expressions, or whether certain frequent target expressions can be successfully generated. The results can be useful for systematically checking the coverage of MT systems in order to speed up the development cycle of rule-based MT. This approach can also enhance current techniques for finding translation equivalents by distributional similarity and for automatically identifying features of MT-tractable language.

Reference with noun phrases can only be described by drawing on different branches of linguistics such as pragmatics, semantics, syntax, morphology, phonology and stylistics. In a contrastive analysis of the use of articles in pairs of languages such as Danish and German, it has been shown to be expedient to deal first of all with the material in terms of a common prag-matic and text-semantic tertium comparationis (i. e. comparative framework) and subsequently to include constraints from other levels of description. Although Danish and German are in fact closely related languages, they differ considerably with respect to reference and the use of articles, and these – at times quite complicated – differences lead to a great deal of interference in translation. In a series of experiments in which translation processes were studied using the computer program Translog (developed by Arnt Lykke Jakobsen of the Copenhagen Business School), it has been shown that an effective means of combatting reference-related interference relating to reference in translation processes is to give individual consultation, through which the information obtained from observations made during the transla-tion process and the individual strengths and weaknesses of translators can be combined with the insights of contrastive linguistics.

A large number of evaluation metrics exist for machine translation (MT) systems, but depending on the intended context of use of such a system, not all metrics are equally relevant. Based on the ISO/IEC 9126 and 14598 standards for software evaluation, the Framework for the Evaluation of Machine Translation in ISLE (FEMTI) provides guidelines for the selection of quality characteristics to be evaluated depending on the expected task, users, and input characteristics of an MT system. This approach to contextual evaluation was implemented as a web-based application which helps its users design evaluation plans. In addition, FEMTI offers experts in evaluation the possibility to enter and share their knowledge using a dedicated web-based tool, tested in several evaluation exercises.

Broadcasting in today ’s world is characterized by the tensions between competing entities, including the nation-state, the agents of globalization as well as national and other minorities. This article sets out to describe these tensions as manifested in translation for Israeli TV, focusing on the relations between Hebrew – the main and most ideologically protected language of Israel – and two minority languages, Arabic and Russian. The latter represent groups that are similar in size but differ greatly in that only the former seeks acknowledgement as a national minority.
