In this study, the Delphi method was used to construct the evaluation index system of the specific physical fitness of Chinese wheelchair badminton players. The Delphi method was used in the first two rounds to determine sport-specific strength and conditioning evaluation indexes for wheelchair badminton athletes. The Analytic Hierarchy Process was used in the third round to determine the weighting of each index. The results indicate that the recovery rate of questionnaires in the first two rounds was higher than 90%, the degree of expert authority was >80%, the degree of expert coordination in the second round was 0.350 and was greater than that in the first round (0.298), and significance testing of the coordination coefficient was significant (p < 0.001), thus indicating that expert opinions were consistent. Results during construction of the evaluation system were credible. Ultimately, we identified four primary indicators, 12 secondary indicators, and 30 tertiary indicators. The order of the four primary indices in terms of weighting was as follows: sport-specific skills (0.4406), sports qualities (0.2928), cardiorespiratory function (0.1828), and body shape (0.0838). We used the Delphi method to construct an evaluation index system for the sport-specific physical ability of elite male wheelchair badminton athletes. The index system exhibited high credibility and specificity for wheelchair badminton.

Cerebral ischemia is currently the third leading cause of death worldwide. Among its complications, cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) is considered the most inevitable problem. To address this condition, there is a need for the development of more drugs. Wedelolactone, the main active chemical component extracted from dried lotus leaves, exhibits a wide range of pharmacological effects. Here we constructed an oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R) model. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assays evaluated the impact of Wedelolactone on cell growth. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assessed its effects on inflammation. We employed 2′,7′-Dichlorofluorescein (DCF) staining and an iron detection kit to measure ferroptosis. Flow cytometry (FCM) and immunoblot assays were utilized to investigate cell apoptosis. The results showed that Wedelactone promoted OGD-induced HT-22 cell viability and alleviated OGD/R-induced cellular inflammation, OGD/R-stimulated ferroptosis and OGD/R-induced apoptosis. Mechanically, Wedelactone inhibited OGD/R-stimulated ferroptosis via mediating glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) expression. In conclusion, Wedelolactone may attenuate cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (CIR)/I by blocking GPX4-mediated ferroptosis.

Prostate health is related to the frequency of ejaculation and prostate drainage. Frequent, repetitive ejaculations theoretically may pose a prostate cancer risk due to ensuing high testosterone levels and loss of zinc. In line with this, the proximity of the human rectum and prostate is of diagnostic and therapeutic importance. We provide evidence to support the view that the proximity of the rectum and prostate in men enables lower bowel distention to compress the prostate’s lateral side to facilitate drainage, which might lower cancer risk. This drainage mechanism is likely on-going and gradual, compared to rapid drainage following ejaculation. The physiological context suggests that these mechanisms of prostate drainage are complementary. Dietary content containing polyphenol- and fiber-rich meals, along with voluminous stool formation and increased gastrointestinal transit may all help improve prostate drainage. This may be important in voluntary abstinent men or other categories of sexually limited men. Recognizing that the anatomic relationship between the rectal area and prostate may facilitate prostate drainage, because of diet and gastro-intestinal activity, could be important to prostate health maintenance.

FOXD2 Adjacent Opposite Strand RNA 1 (FOXD2-AS1), a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), exhibits specifically elevated in numerous cancerous cells. Numerous studies have shown that FOXD2-AS1 encourages cellular proliferation, migration and invasion. Nevertheless, the exact mechanism through which FOXD2-AS1 contributes to prostate cancer (PCa) remains unclear. Consequently, we aimed to explore the implications of FOXD2-AS1 on the growth of PCa. Initially, an elevation of FOXD2-AS1 observed in PCa cells (PC-3, DU145 and Lncap) than the prostate normal cell line RWPE2. Then, PC-3 cells were tranafected with shFOXD2-AS1, sh-Numerical Control (shNC) or FOXD2-AS1 to assess the implications of FOXD2-AS. Cell growth was measured with cell counting kit-8 (CCK8) and 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine (EDU) assays, and cell invasion and migration were assessed by Transwell assays, which demonstrated that FOXD2-AS1 silence impeded proliferation, migration and invasion of PC-3 cells. Additionally, we discovered that FOXD2-AS1 bonded with miR-206/programmed cell death protein 10 (PDCD10) trough analyzing the interaction sites of lncRNA, miRNA and protein. Then, these interaction abilities were confirmed by dual-luciferase reporter assays and RT-qPCR, suggesting FOXD2-AS1 could upregulate the amount of PDCD10 through suppressing miR-206. Furthermore, the role of FOXD2-AS1 silencing on PCa carcinogenesis were assessed. In vivo experiment, shFOXD2-AS1 led to a notable reduction in both the size and weight of PCa. These findings indicated that FOXD2-AS1 silencing effectively hindered the progression of prostate cancer. In conclusion, the upregulation of FOXD2-AS1 was observed in PCa, and the knockdown of FOXD2-AS1 could alleviated tumor development by targeting miR-206 to upregulate PDCD10 expression.

This study investigated whether the prehospital shock index (SI) could predict clinical outcomes in trauma patients, with or without pre-injury alcohol consumption, and whether this predictive capacity varied by age. We conducted a retrospective study on severe trauma patients transported to a level-1 trauma center by emergency medical services from 2015 to 2021. Our primary exposure was abnormal SI, defined as an SI ≥0.9, with in-hospital mortality and poor functional outcomes as study outcomes of interest. Multivariable logistic regression analysis estimated the effect of SI on clinical outcomes. Our findings indicated a significant association between abnormal SI and poor functional outcomes in all trauma patients (adjusted odds ratio: 2.15; 95%confidence interval: 1.41–3.28), notably pronounced in the older age group (adjusted odds ratio: 3.56; 95% confidence interval: 1.55–8.30). However, no association was found with in-hospital mortality. Importantly, among severe trauma patients who did not consume alcohol, abnormal SI was significantly associated with poor functional outcomes, irrespective of age, and with increased in-hospital mortality exclusively in the older age group. Thus, abnormal SI significantly predicted clinical outcomes in non-alcohol-consuming severe trauma patients, with the predictive power for in-hospital mortality being specifically significant in older, non-alcohol-consuming patients.

To analyze the contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) features of livers in male patients under 50 years-of-age with liver cancer and unhealthy life habits. A total of 89 male patients with liver cancer and unhealthy life habits were included in the observation group (all of these patients were first diagnosed with liver cancer when they were <50 years-of-age) and 60 male patients of the same age with benign liver lesions admitted during the same period were included in the control group. All patients had undergone CEUS examination. We summarized and compared the features of liver CEUS from patients in the two groups and analyzed the relationship between liver CEUS results and pathological features. The time to enhancement, enhancement duration and the clearance time of cancer tissues were all significantly shorter in patients from the observation group than those in the control group (p < 0.05). Enhancement patterns of cancer tissues and benign lesion tissues in patients in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.05). Cancerous tissues had fast wash-in and fast wash-out features (93.2%), while benign lesions had slow wash-in and slow wash-out features (60.00%). The proportion of patients with microvascular invasion (MVI)-positive lesions showing more than a 15% increase in maximum diameter was significantly larger than those with MVI-negative lesions (p < 0.05). The differences in enhancement features between liver cancer lesions with various differentiation grades in the portal phase and the delayed phase were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Our findings show that CEUS has high clinical value for diagnosing liver cancer and can be used to judge the MVI status and differentiation grade of liver cancer lesions, thus providing a reference for diagnosing liver cancer and its severity.

The study aims to investigate the effect of ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) management mode on functional exercise compliance and functional recovery after ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction in males. Patients were admitted between June 2021 and December 2021 as the control group, and patients were admitted between January 2022 and June 2022 as the observation group. Routine nursing was adopted in the control group, while ERAS management mode was applied in the observation group for nursing. The clinical nursing efficacy, knee joint function (Lysholm score) and VAS (Visual analogue scale) score, patients’ functional training compliance and complications were compared. After intervention, the swelling disappearance time, pain disappearance time, hospital stay and other indicators of clinical nursing effect in the observation group were better (p < 0.05); the preoperative Lysholm score and VAS score showed no statistical significance (p > 0.05). The Lysholm score and VAS score at each time point after operation were markedly higher, and repeated measures analysis of variance manifested that the Lysholm score, VAS score, intergroup effect, time effect and interaction effect in both groups had statistical significance (p < 0.05). The total compliance rate of functional training in the observation group was conspicuously higher (p < 0.05); the overall incidence of complications in the observation group (13.3%) was evidently lower (28.7%) (p < 0.05). ERAS management mode can improve the functional training compliance, accelerate the recovery of joint function, reduce the incidence of complications and promote the quality of life of patients with ACL injury.

High handgrip strength in men’s artistic gymnastics is crucial, mainly for improving performance and to potentially prevent injuries, as well as for the fact that gymnasts body movements are around immovable apparatuses (pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and high bar) for the extended period of time. Since there are not so many studies that have dealt with this topic and on actual competition, we have aimed to examine the handgrip strength influence on the competition result in elite male artistic gymnasts. The sample of participants were conducted of 37 elite male artistic gymnasts (8–21 years old), from 8 different countries as national team competitors at the International Competition “Laza Krstić and Marica Dželatović” held in Novi Sad, Serbia. Basic anthropometric measurements were included (body height, body weight and Body Mass Index (BMI)), along with training experience and handgrip strength measurement (both dominant and nondominant hand). Kolmogorov-Smirnov Z test (p < 0.05) was used for distribution normality, along with regression analysis with Model 1 (participants age, training experience, body height, body weight and BMI), Model 2 (Model 1 + dominant handgrip strength) and Model 3 (Model 1 + nondominant handgrip strength). SPSS v.20 was used for all statistical analysis. Our study have revealed that there is significant influence of all 3 Models on the parallel bars final result (p = 0.33; p = 0.49; p = 0.31, respectively), in terms of all set of variables, whereas body weight Beta scores (28.6%; 30.3%; 32.7%, respectively) moslty explains the results. Both dominant and nondominant handgrip strength are influential factors only on the parallel bars final result. Since both hands are contributing equally, bilateral training is necessary.
{"title":"Is the handgrip strength influential factor on the competition result in elite male artistic gymnasts?","authors":"","doi":"10.22514/jomh.2023.081","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22514/jomh.2023.081","url":null,"abstract":"High handgrip strength in men’s artistic gymnastics is crucial, mainly for improving performance and to potentially prevent injuries, as well as for the fact that gymnasts body movements are around immovable apparatuses (pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and high bar) for the extended period of time. Since there are not so many studies that have dealt with this topic and on actual competition, we have aimed to examine the handgrip strength influence on the competition result in elite male artistic gymnasts. The sample of participants were conducted of 37 elite male artistic gymnasts (8–21 years old), from 8 different countries as national team competitors at the International Competition “Laza Krstić and Marica Dželatović” held in Novi Sad, Serbia. Basic anthropometric measurements were included (body height, body weight and Body Mass Index (BMI)), along with training experience and handgrip strength measurement (both dominant and nondominant hand). Kolmogorov-Smirnov Z test (p < 0.05) was used for distribution normality, along with regression analysis with Model 1 (participants age, training experience, body height, body weight and BMI), Model 2 (Model 1 + dominant handgrip strength) and Model 3 (Model 1 + nondominant handgrip strength). SPSS v.20 was used for all statistical analysis. Our study have revealed that there is significant influence of all 3 Models on the parallel bars final result (p = 0.33; p = 0.49; p = 0.31, respectively), in terms of all set of variables, whereas body weight Beta scores (28.6%; 30.3%; 32.7%, respectively) moslty explains the results. Both dominant and nondominant handgrip strength are influential factors only on the parallel bars final result. Since both hands are contributing equally, bilateral training is necessary. In order to expand the knowledge on this topic and completely understand the influential factors, future studies are needed on this sample. Regardless of our main findings, our results should be taken with caution.","PeriodicalId":16360,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Men's Health","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135801089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
The current study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of simultaneous administration of Zingiber officinale (ginger) and Cinnamomum cassia (cinnamon) extracts in mitigating testicular changes associated with diabetes mellitus in rats and to investigate its molecular mode of action. After induction of diabetes using streptozotocin, 36 male rats were divided to six groups namely control, diabetic, metformin-treated, cinnamon-treated, ginger-treated and combined, each group having 6 rats. Fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, testosterone was measured. Expression of inflammatory mediators; tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) was assessed in the testicular tissue. Histopathological changes in the testis were observed and spermatogenesis and apoptosis were assessed immunohistochemically. The histological and biochemical studies of the untreated group confirmed structural changes in testes induced by diabetes. Oral administration of ginger and cinnamon increased insulin level significantly increased while the blood glucose level significantly decreased in diabetic rats, improving structural testicular changes considerably. Joint intake of ginger and cinnamon increased antihyperglycemic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects markedly improving the testicular injury compared to the administration of either of them. SIRT1 expression in the testis significantly increased in ginger plus cinnamon-treated rats. These results indicate that when administrated together, ginger and cinnamon synergistically enhanced antioxidant, antiapoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects and induced antihyperglycemic effect comparable to metformin. The combination of ginger and cinnamon also upregulated SIRT1 in the testis.

Anejaculation is the inability to ejaculate during sexual activity, either in an antegrade or retrograde fashion. Both anejaculation following an iatrogenic injury of the abdominal aorta and the efficacy of low-frequency neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) in treating anejaculation have been reported rarely. In this case report, we describe a patient who experienced anejaculation following an iatrogenic injury to the abdominal aorta and eventually regained normal ejaculation ability following treatment with NMES. The patient, a 23-year-old Chinese man, underwent laparoscopic varicocele ligation on both sides, during which he sustained a ruptured wound in the abdominal aorta from a 10-mm trocar. To stop the bleeding, he underwent abdominal aortic balloon catheter dilatation combined with covered stent implantation. However, 10 days after the endovascular interventions, the patient developed hemorrhagic shock and underwent emergency exploratory laparotomy and adventitial suture of the abdominal aorta. Despite normal erectile function since a week after the last surgery, the patient complained of aejaculation for a year during intercourse or masturbation. After receiving NMES treatment for over two months, the patient reported successful intravaginal ejaculation during intercourse, and the improvement persisted for a month after treatment. Altogether, these findings suggest that NMES could be a feasible, safe, and cost-effective treatment method for improving anejaculation and provides a novel option for patients with this condition.
