Ojective. genetical characterization the creole Colombian sheep and their relationships with breeds of European origins. Materials and methods. Blood samples of 261 sheeps from the following populations were collected: Criollos de Lana (CL), Mora Colombiana (MC), Criollo de Pelo (CP), criollos mestizos (Mes), Hampshire (Hamp), Corriedale (Corr), Katahdin (Kath), Pelibuey (Pel), in 40 farms of 8 departments (Cordoba, Magdalena, Cesar, Atlantico, Valle del Cauca, Narino, Boyaca, Tolima) and 30 samples of Merino Spanish, Merino Precoz (MP), Merinofleischschaf (MF), Segureno (Seg) and Uda (UD) de Nigeria. A total of 15 microsatellites markers were included inthis study. Results. In creole sheep, the average number of alleles was found 6.20±1.48 (CL), 7.27±1.39 (CP) y 3.60±1.55 (MC); high genetic diversity found (high heterozygosities 75%), negative values in the FIS revealed high degree of introgression; furthermore the FST revealed genetic structure in both: Creole sheep (FST=0.02**) and departments (FST=0.039**).According to genetic distance, the creole Colombian sheep differs with outsider sheep. Conclusions. The results recommend protecting the Creole sheep production because it has been threatened by constant cross with foreign breeds, which would lead to the loss of genetic identity and adapting traits of creole sheep.themselves.

Objective. To describe the prevalence of canine mammary gland tumors (CMT) in females in the municipality of Manizales-Colombia from 2014-2017. Materials and methods. A database of 15961 patients was consolidated. The variables analyzed were, breed, age, reproductive history, weight, diet type and clinical characterization of the tumor with the TNM (tumor-node-metastases) staging system. The statistical analysis include Pearson’s chi-squared test with Yates correction for continuity and Fisher’s exact test (p<0.05), relative risk and odds ratio (CI95%) and Kaplan-Meier estimator for survival analysis. Results. The incidence in purebred dogs was 79.14%, with a peak at the average age of 9.3 years old. Pearson’s chi-squared test and the relative risk and odds ratios indicated a high risk for purebreds (p=0.019, 3.96/100, 1.64, respectively). Females of ages between 9 and 12 years old showed a 74% likelihood of developing a mammary tumor. No found significant relation to weight or reproductive stage but indeed a high association with homemade diet (p<0.001). The inguinal mammary pairs were the most affected (6.9%). The Kaplan-Meier estimate showed a higher survival of surgically-intervened patients, with 2013 days of survival after diagnosis with surgery compared to 1484 days without surgery. Conclusions. The study confirmed the relevance of risk factors, breed type, age, body condition and diet type in the mammary tumor presentation. Furthermore, it highlights the need for improving and integrating the veterinary diagnostic information systems, considering their importance in public health.

Dogs with Giardia infections have diarrhea that persists for days, even after treatment. We managed canine giardiasis using two distinct approaches: treatment with the antiprotozoan secnidazole alone; and secnidazole plus a homeopathic product that is indicated for control of diarrhea in dogs. Treatment I: Ten beagle dogs showed clinical signs of severe diarrhea. Their feces revealed large numbers of cysts consistent with Giardia sp. Therefore, we treated the dogs with secnidazole (10 mg/kg, single dose) given orally. Five days after treatment, all dogs were negative for Giardia spp. Treatment II: Three months later, the same ten Beagles again presented with diarrhea. Feces were collected, revealing Giardia sp. in all dogs. This time, we treated them with an antiprotozoan (secnidazole, 10 mg/kg dose) combined with a commercial homeopathic drug for diarrhea control (3 g dose/animal at 12 h interval). We found that three to five homeopathic doses were needed to achieve normal fecal scores in all dogs. After 5 days of treatment, stool samples had normal consistency and were negative for Giardia. This is the first record of using secnidazole to control canine giardiasis associated with homeopathic drugs to prevent diarrhea.

Objective. To quantify the concentration and consumption of the protein fragments (NPN, TP, RDTP, SDTP, NDIP, and ADIP) present in the diet supplied to cattle, and its effect on the digestibility of crude protein. Materials and methods. Diets offered to Chino Santandereano cattle in stables were analyzed, receiving different levels of supplementation, using four animals in the 4x4 Latin square outline, the treatments being: NS, not supplemented; LOW, supplemented with an amount relative to 0.5% of body weight; MEDIUM, supplemented with an amount relative to 1.0% of body weight; HIGH, supplemented with a quantity relative to 1.5% of body weight. Consumption was determined daily, and digestibility through total stool collection in the last two days of each period. Results. A higher concentration of crude protein was found in supplement compared to grass (p<0.001), the forage exhibiting a higher concentration of CPNPN (p<0.001), at the same time, that the supplement presented higher concentration of TP (p<0.001) and RDTP (p=0.027). Supplemented animals presented higher consumption of CP, CPNPN (p=0.037), TP, NDIP, RDTP, ADIP and SDTP (p<0.05), however, when the concentration that represents the consumption of ADIP in the consumption of CP was determined, no difference was observed between supplemented and NS (p=0.078). Higher digestibility of CP was found in supplemented animals when contrasted with NS (p<0.001), an upward linear effect was observed between supplemented treatments as the level of supplementation increased. Conclusions. Supplementation improves the digestibility of crude protein by providing a greater amount of highly digestible nitrogenous fragments.
