Abstract Despite awareness of the value of short-term memory for the development of interpreter trainees’ skills, little research has been devoted to it and, in practice, the relevant share of an interpretation training programme is often limited, because of the rush to embark on acquiring note-taking and other techniques. This paper addresses a possible research project to look more closely at short-term memory development and the possible impact that such development could have on curriculum planning.

Abstract In Chinese mainland higher education institutions, translator and interpreter education comprises research-oriented Master’s and Doctoral programs in translation and interpreting studies, and Bachelor’s and Master’s-level programs that focus on developing students’ practical translation and interpreting skills and knowledge. A limited few also offer conference interpreter training that leads to a professional diploma. While this structure has been established for the past two decades or so, many Chinese scholars have argued in favor of adding a professional doctorate in translation and interpreting (DTI) to the mix and expect it to have positive implications for academia and the industry. This paper provides the context in which DTI should be interpreted and takes stock of the proposals for its design. It also makes a brief comparison of DTI and the traditional academic doctorate in terms of admission, research goals, focus of study, assessment approaches, as well as internship and dissertation requirements, and it argues for the need for finer differentiation.

Abstract The phenomenon of self-translation dates back more than two thousand years (Kumakhova 2005), but it was not studied by academics until the 1960s because of its unique and marginal nature. In order to examine the similarities and differences in research focus as well as the overall situation of self-translation research in China and abroad, this study gathered relevant literature on self-translation research from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Web of Science, which are broadly recognized databases in China and abroad; and it used CiteSpace 6.1.R2 visualization software to generate a scientific knowledge map to examine comprehensively the current situation, hot spots, and frontiers of this field, so as to come up ultimately with forward-looking suggestions for the future development of self-translation studies.

Abstract The sudden outbreak of Covid-19 turned out to be an opportunity for Chinese pharmaceutical companies to go overseas. A sound corporate image, as presented by a corporate social responsibility (CSR) report, is a must. Therefore, companies must pay attention to the quality of translations of CSR reports. This study analyses the 2017–2020 CSR reports of Fosun Pharma Group, a top Chinese pharmaceutical company, from the text perspective and that of social practice, based on a self-built corpus. The 2017–2020 CSR reports of Johnson & Johnson are used as parallel texts. The text analysis examines the high-frequency nouns and verbs, first-person pronouns and modal verbs, and finds that Fosun Pharma enjoys the image of a company that focuses on progress, is positive, pragmatic, attaches importance to corporate management, and is rigorous and objective. Viewed from the perspective of social practices, the difference in corporate image between the two companies is influenced by power distance, as they are at different stages of development, and given the limitations associated with the use of English as a second language. The research results have implications for the development of English translations of CSR reports of pharmaceutical companies in China and the dissemination of an overseas corporate image.

Abstract Studies of the language interpretation of Chinese political discourse usually focus on the interpretation product through a textual analysis conducted between the source and target-language texts. Few studies touch upon the reception and implications of this specific type of interpretation in English-language media. This study aims to investigate the proportion of different types of representations in media coverage and the variations in China’s image. Firstly, we present the distribution of different types of representation; this is followed by a calculation of the frequency of appraisal epithets within the appraisal system; finally, the study identifies various translation strategies employed in government interpretation and media reports, and the variations in China’s image. The evidence suggests the statistical significance of both equaled and downgraded images between the government interpretation and media translation; furthermore, government interpretation presenting more cases of equaled images, and media translation produced a higher number of downgraded images.

Abstract Document translation in the context of the Unite Nations, which involves a colossal system of documentation with a huge variety of subject-matters, should be considered as a specialised translating activity. A relevant theoretical framework is needed to explore and contribute to the actual practices on the ground, much remaining to be done in this respect, though. The present study attempts to explore the possibility of precise understanding of source text and its accurate rendering into target language, by focusing on some aspects of the text linguistics as the theoretical reference points, and based on the empirical evidences in the English to Chinese translation of the UN documents. It tries to explore how much the role of text or discourse analysis can play in the study, and hopefully in the contributions to the quality improvement, of such a specialised activity as UN document translation.

From designing to organization and implementation, many practices were introduced for the first time in China. The event and experience are invaluable. This article provides a full landscape to the contest, including preparation, contest procedures, marking rules, improvements for future contests, problems encountered and further discussions for teaching of simultaneous interpreting. The experience will be of support for other future events of the discipline of interpretation.

This article examines the controversy over The Vegetarian (Han 2015), Deborah Smith’s English translation of Han Kang’s Korean novel, 채식주의자 Chaesikjuuija (2007). The translation, winner of the Man Booker International Prize in 2016, provoked a heated discussion in South Korea. A close analysis of three influential articles – Cho (2017), B. Kim (2017), and W. Kim (2018) – shows how the debates on the supposed mistranslation of The Vegetarian are dominated by a preoccupation with fidelity and literal translation. They dismiss the translator’s interpretation or transformation, regarding accuracy or fidelity as the sole criterion for a good translation. Significantly, the critics’ advocacy of literal translation, and hence their objections to The Vegetarian, reflect three levels of political anxiety: over ‘superior’ translation, over ‘English’ translation, and over a female translator’s ‘feminist’ translation.

Even though studies at the intersection of translation and media are a burgeoning subfield within Translation Studies, the integration of media theory into the scholarship on translation remains underdeveloped. Joining a recent surge of interest in adapting media theory to a broad analysis of the impacts of the technologies that organise and support translation, this article takes up the concept of cultural technique to argue that, just as technological revolutions have reshaped translation practices, translations have structured media systems. Following its exploration of a medial methodology in Translation Studies and the benefits of a historicist perspective, the article turns to a set of case studies, all sourced from the Romantic period, which was characterised by a complex attitude to mediality and translation prefigurative of the current digital turn. The case studies demonstrate the benefits of a medial view in the study of translation.
