Verse translations from the Iliad and Odyssey embedded in Thomas Elyot’s Gouernour, Roger Ascham’s Toxophilus, and Nicholas Udall’s Apophthegmes might seem the poor cousins of longer and better-known Homer translations by poets such as George Chapman. But this article, which pays close literary-critical attention to Elyot’s, Ascham’s, and Udall’s Homer translations, argues that they play an important and mostly untold part in a larger story concerning the translation of Homer into English, not to mention the vernacular translation of ancient Greek literature in England in the sixteenth century. These fragmentary translations reveal that early Tudor writers had a wider array of options in their methods of classical translation than has hitherto been appreciated. They also call for more nuanced consideration of the diverse intellectual, political, and literary contexts that spurred poetic innovation in late Henrician England.

Samples of William Popple's unprinted Horatian imitations of the 1750s appeared in this journal in 2007 (Vol. 16 Part 2), their texts taken from two manuscript volumes at the Beinecke Rare Books and Manuscripts Library. The best of Popple's remaining, and still unpublished, Satires of Horace are here edited and printed: Satires 1.4, 1.6, 1.9, 2.1, and 2.3. At the same time, fuller information now available on Popple, and on the social and professional circles to which these works make reference, allows some further account of the historical and biographical context of these Horatian imitations.

On Translating the Dark Enigma: The Tao Te Ching

This paper explains the methodology used in its author’s recently completed translation of the Tao Te Ching. It addresses the considerations which arise from the historical, cultural, and linguistic distance between this ancient masterpiece and the target language and culture of twenty-first-century Anglo-America. More specifically, comparisons are made with previously published, highly respected translations of this text. Though emphasizing practice rather than theory, the article reflects the broader challenges facing any translation of poetry that crosses multiple time-frames, cultural values, and writing systems as well as languages. David Hinton has referred to the Tao Te Ching as a ‘dark enigma’. This essay tries to elucidate the many levels of darkness that comprise it.
