This study aims to identify the types of illocutionary acts employed in both male and female beauty product advertisements on Instagram, as well as to discover the male and female customers’ perspectives on the linguistic features of the advertised products as shown in their comments. The data were taken from six (6) official Instagram accounts of beauty product brands, particularly 10 male and female product advertisements and the customers’ comments of those products. The data were analyzed qualitatively by categorizing and comparing the types of illocutionary acts employed in the advertisements. Moreover, the customers’ comments were analyzed based on the tone and context as well as the copywriting techniques used. The findings show that there are 3 types of illocutionary acts found in 10 advertisements: representatives, directives, and commissives. Male products have in total of 12 representative acts, 4 directives, and 1 commissive act, while female products used 12 representative acts, 5 directives, and 3 commissive acts. Furthermore, this study also found that both female and male customers give more positive comments toward each gender's products. However, there are no significant language differences between male and female products in their copywriting techniques. We hope that this study could provide insight on the use of illocutionary types, particularly in e-business and copywriting, to get a better understanding of the hidden intention behind the advertisements as well as to provide sufficient information for the readers to explore.

COVID-19 has a significant impact on consumer shopping behavior in retail markets. In this paper, we consider a competitive market consisting of brick-and-mortar retailer and online retailer, and use game theory to construct a Hotelling model in a competitive situation. Three decision models of no government subsidy, consumer subsidy, and brick-and-mortar retailer subsidy are considered to explore the effects of consumer social distance preferences and government subsidy strategies on retailer pricing and epidemic prevention service levels. The results show that subsidizing consumers will not lead to better socio-economic development, but it will definitely benefit the operation of B&M retailer. To some extent, the cost subsidy of epidemic prevention services for B&M retailer can improve the economic level of society.

Internet of Things (IoT) based liquid cleaning dispensers are being increasingly used in public buildings for personal sanitation purposes. However, it is not always easy for facility managers to keep track of, as well as predict product usage. Most devices deployed at facilities still require the facility/building manager or staff at the facility, to check the devices from time to time. In recent years, the need to effectively utilize these devices as well as anticipate usage rates has become necessary because the time lag between refilling the dispensers and their being out of service can pose health risks. This paper thus explores how machine learning (ML) algorithms can be applied to improve the availability of IoT-based liquid cleaning dispensers. The goal of the paper is to apply machine learning in predicting the daily usage volumes of cleaning solutions, thereby increasing the efficiency of the cleaning dispensers. The paper compares different machine learning algorithms to determine the best algorithm for predicting the usage patterns of IoT-based cleaning dispensers, thereby, develops a predictive model that can be applied to improve the availability of cleaning products in IoT-based dispensers. The results of the analysis show that the Random Forest algorithm performed best among the evaluated models using regression performance measures. Hence, ML algorithms can be applied to help building or sanitation managers improve the availability of cleaning products in IoT-based cleaning dispensers, ultimately improving the user experience.

To understand the impact of the pandemic on different stocks ‘relative risks, we analyze the stock market by comparing pre-covid and post-covid statistics. By using the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) [1] to fit our data, our result shows interesting trends on both individual and industry levels. There are three significant implications of the result of our research: 1)The R-Square of most stocks’ increased after the outbreak of Covid; 2)The consumer staples, real estate, and utilities sectors experienced a much more significant increase in R-square than other sectors; 3)Companies with stocks with a more significant decrease in their CAPM's β factor are less negatively influenced by COVID-19, and companies with stocks with a more significant increase in their CAPM's β factor are in the utilities and real estate sectors.
